Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

Can you guys please tell me the performance with telkom uncapped products? I got upgraded from 2mb to 4mb and I am with openweb atm but it seems their prices are increasing. I am with the Gold account at the moment.

1.Performance regarding torrents? Torrents are heavily shaped during the day. Altho in saying that today mine have been running full tilt
2.How is the shaping? Besides shaping torrents and nzb (occasionally) shaping is almost non-existant. Streaming and Http browsing and downloads run flawlessy all day and night (if your exchange permits that is)
3.Is there any throttling? Yes throttling does exist, but I have never been throttled yet. The limits are around 100GB per MB ie 2MB - 200GB. But guys are getting way more than that without being throttled in fact I have not seen any complaints of being throttled in a long while
4.Overall will it be a wise move to change ISP to telkom? Depends on you. Ti suits me but might not suit you.

Thanks

Gboss - those caps are not the case.
2mb I was getting 320gb + without any form of shaping or throttling.
Regarding nzb/nntp being throttled, I have never experienced this on a usenetbucket account.

It depends on your download behaviour. I've been throttled once at about 120GB on a 1Mb/s line. If however you schedule the majority of your downloads from say 11pm-7am (officially 12-6) you can do a lot more, I've only been throttled once and never again. I also don't hear of others being throttled so I reckon it's almost a non-issue.

I've experienced torrent shaping during the day and others have as well, as of late however I seem to have zero shaping while others still complain.

Don;t get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I actually think the service is great but at the same time I just want to point out some known things people have experienced.

Mmm thnx for the replies guys. This whole weekend my torrents have been running at no more than 210kb/s, and just after the upgrade I got from 2mb to 4mb, I was getting 310-380kb/s for a few days. Also tried my afrihost backup account and got the same results. Phoned telkom today to do a port reset... Results looks pretty much the same, even on my afrihost capped account... Thus the reason for asking. Hoping im not going off topic, as this thread is about Telkom ISP and not Telkom ADSL.

Good news, I got upgraded to 4Mb !
K@k news - My line is only syncing at 3 :(

Noise on the line, apparently. Call logged to investigate. Kudos to Telkom though :)

Download Speed: 2638 kbps (329.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 425 kbps (53.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 83 ms

... also it seems that gamers often have issues with latency if they have moved from Mweb/Openweb.

Those limits quoted above were based on a survey taken by forum members due to MWEB's throtlling policy.

On my 1Mb/s line managed 163GB last month, Currently on 131GB :D

I know a few people that just download because they can and I feel that attitude toward the internet needs to stop in SA.

Use what you consume, that is the entire nature of the cloud and uncapped technically. Everything is out there and if you want it you get it. No point downloading or grabbing the entire internet.

People are getting seasons of shows they will never watch and iso files for operatings sytems and software they are never going to install.

+1 Couldn't agree with you more! I actually know a few people like this!

That is why you have SickBeard and CouchPotato, so you can download only what you actually watching...

A question, is it possible for the ISP to see you are using torrent protocols, and then when you do that they throttle your http browsing speed?

I have uTorrent open (not even downloading anything), and my http browsing is useless. As soon as I close uTorrent, my browsing works fine.

Is this something wrong with uTorrent or an ISP thing?

So i was upgraded to a 2MB line....thought that I would get a higher cap...
Downloaded about 120GB and now throttled to hell...

I'm guessing that my cap is still on the old 1MB settings?

getting about 40KB/s

Have you checked the location of your titracker bar?

Howzit Electric,
I was just generalising/averaging on the limits, that why I said guys are getting way more than 100GB/MB. I haven't been throttled since joining Ti but then again the most I pull in a month on average is less than 100Gb. Which is way under the limtit for my 2MB account.
I havent used a pay NZB service yet but for the majority of the time my NZB'z run flat out (350-420kB/s) its the odd occasion that I find I'm getting a lower throughput but then again that could come down to missing articles etc.

All-in-all I'm a very happy Ti camper :D

It was seeding at 30kb/s, would that affect browsing?

Yes.

Also you probably mean 30KB/s, big 'B' and small 'b' makes a big difference (Bytes vs bits), keep that in mind when you post info.

I have a 10mb/s line and my international browsing is really ridiculous. I'm on the Telkom Premium 10mb/s product.

I'm in Randburg with a vdsl exchange.
I stream Netflix and I get low quality if I'm lucky. The local speedtest yields 8.9mb/s but a speedtest to an international server in the USA gives me 1.5mb/s and over 500ms ping.

I don't download p2p and I watch Netflix for maybe 3 hours a day.

I'm paying over a grand for this service and I'm getting worse quality than what I got when I was on Mweb's 2mb/s line.
