Hi Ranger. Thanks for this :) Does this mean Hulu might work again? I had such issues the past 2 months with Hulu's ads buffering to standstill while the episodes themselves work 100% that i had to cancel my subscription to hulu. Any idea if these changes might improve things in my case?

Internet chatter says this is not specific to us.
This is an international problem.
That being said, the problem has all but stopped on my 4mb line.

Well every time over the past 2 months when Hulu and Netflix have been dead or low quality on TI, they work flawlessly on Afrihost.

So I'm sticking to my theory and chatter that what I see and experience is definitely a TI international & shaping problem.

I'm with TI, I don't have the same issues anymore.
So it could be with TI but then it should happen to everyone on TI, not so?

I had a dream! That one day Telkom would stop throttling gaming and start throttling streaming instead!

Thanks for the info. Did u also have the exact problem with ads and not the actuall epp stuttering and buffering?

Exactly that.
Episodes stream flawlessly but ads stutter or don't play.
Internet search revealed hundreds if not thousands of complaints on the hulu form and other forums.

Another issue I have noticed is when programming starts and you revert to fullscreen.
If you don't wait for the ad to start, it locks up and requires a refresh of the page.

4mb has resolved most of the issues but from my experience it even happens on a 10mb line at a friends house.

Well on a Samsung Smart TV you can choose the bitrate to stream Hulu at - would be interesting to know what rate you are getting ?

In the evenings it's dodgy SD quality <1 Mbps on TI most nights, while you can get 3.5 Mpbs on Afrihost (crystal clear - better than DSTV HD).

Unfortunately on an Apple TV you rely on auto-streaming quality selection so it's not as easy to diagnose.

Even Apple TV movie trailers suffer the same fate.

Based on comments on these here forums I see people who report having problems with streaming video protocols like Hulu, Netflix in the evenings far exceeding those who don't.

I can only put this down to a technical issue or aggressive shaping / de-prioritizing in the evenings.

Why would Afrihost be flawless as a backup test account ?

Unless TI have different shaping rules and throughput allocation for each geographic location, in which case PE is up the pole.

Hope they can sort it out.

We don't intentionally throttle gaming. However, some gaming traffic may not be recognised correctly, in which case it will get incorrect prioritisation.

If this occurs, we need more details (which game, IP of the server, traceroute to the server IP) to be able to investigate further.

We believe we have resolved problems with League of Legends, but would like feedback from users before taking the same approach with other games.

Lag seems to be fixed. My mates and I are testing it out now.
Love from all of us! <3

Found this in Afrithread, thought some might find it intresting. I dont know Telkoms shaping policy but this could play a very similar role in our streaming woes.

Obviously 3rd party DNS will affect the overall speed if you are being shaped or not. Now I don't know what falls under "realtime" but I can tell you that Netflix (with UnoDNS) for one is definitely affected by shaping. When it keeps buffering check client zone and you will see you are being shaped. Click the turbocharge button to overcome the shaping temporarily and it streams as expected.

Interesting info bud.

My question would be though, once a stream is initiated - how can the DNS affect the throughput ?

Routing, because you are using a DNS other than the DNS provided by your ISP, your traffic will not necessarily be routed along the quickest/shortest/fastest path for your region.

Just a guess, I could be wrong.

looking at potentially moving over from MW to TI, would just like to know what kind of speeds I would be looking at with regards to online gaming (Xbox to be specific) and torrents?

Netflix was atrocious last night. Buffering every 2 mins for atleast 30 secs. @Ranger Are the changes you guys making related to this?
