@Waynehooper, its my first posting on the forum so please guide if im doing something wrong, so after reading your post I have been experiencing the same problem during the last 4 months - up and down, but more down Im with 2 telkom adsl capped accounts - 10gigs ea and living in Sunnyridge EL within 1km of the exchange and used to get about 120kb/s on download and about 50kb/s on uploading since Nov 2013 I would be lucky to get 45 kb/s for downloading and about 22 kb/s for upload - have reported it to Telkom internet fault line twice, both times a ref number was given with no feedback and no improvement my latest speedtest http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2492748001.png - actually tonight was nearly double fast loading sites and updating programs

Is there any advice or a light at the end of the tunnel?

There seems to be a lot of people from different towns and exchanges with the same problem, all on Telkom Internet with the speed problem in the evenings.

My speeds were fine on friday and saturday, but last night the high pings and slow speeds were back. Hopefully someone from Telkom will sort this out soon.....

This seems to be a standard problem at the moment.
Everything is great all wknd until Sunday evening comes then it all just falls apart.

*sigh* got a call from Telkom escalations.
1.) They will refund me only if no data was used since the 6th of Jan. They can't seem to grasp the difference between slow, and not working - I tried to explain this multiple times.
2.) I asked why the ISP account has not cancelled after 10 days, and the response was they'll log a cancellation request and get back to me.

I'm still waiting, and paying for a seldom working service.

Upgrades nailed the capacity. Now we all sit. They can say what they want about having capacity but we can all see there's a problem!

My main concern is still that I have done 66GB (conservative estimate: 50% between midnight and 6am) on my 2Mb uncapped connection and am 55% of the way to being a power user. If I switch, that's more likely to be the cause.

LOL, guys... just give up, bite the bullet, cancel and pay an extra subscription at another ISP for one month while waiting for the TI account to be cancelled. R500 for data vs R50k for heart surgery is really small change haha!

I am so glad I cancelled last month. When the 30 days are up I am done with Telkom. I have not bothered to even re-set my modem back to Telkom since I joined another ISP even though I still am technically a customer until March 01. So I honestly cannot say whether they have fixed anything or will fix anything. I just do not care. A month with no explanation but the "we are working on it and have identified the problem" speech was enough. Ten days now of really good internet. No spikes or problem connections or hours spent on a phone trying to get Telkom ISP to explain why you cannot even browse the internet properly...
Do the smart thing and just walk away :)

Pretty please, can someone give the DNS servers for Telkom, Cape Town. Thanks a lot guys.

Ranger gave us these last year when auto-assign was giving hassles:
Primary - 196.43.46.190
Secondary - 196.43.42.190

... but TI is currently auto-assigning these which seems OK for me:
Primary - 196.43.54.190
Secondary - 196.43.38.190

Many thanks MickZA,
I am running very well on T1, I have not had many issues, but, always handy to have some more info at hand if required.
Keno:)

I have a 2 MEG uncapped line, on the 14th of Jan speeds dropped to 14Kb download and 25KB upload (yes my up was faster than my down), they claimed I had been throttled due to over use claiming that I used 179GIGs in the two weeks, that would mean that I was running at 148Kb/s 24/7. Considering that my average download has been 20 to 50 KB/s and average upload steady at about 25Kb/S their claim makes no sense, and I certainly am not on line 24/7 for one day let alone 14 days straight.

Their next excuse was I was too far from the exchange, LMAO the exchange is directly accross the road from me.
So now they blaming my computor. A technician come to the house (finally after 3 months of logging faults) and I did a speed test infront of him (ping 3215s up 18Kb/S down 12KB/S) I then took my modem and comp went next door to my neighbour connected evrything and logged on his system (2Meg uncapped same as me but with MWEB) and did a speed test, (ping 68s up 65KB/S, down 125Kb/S) proving that its not my comp or modem. To date they have done nothing and not once come back to me. I phoned them again today and after waiting for 4H finally got to speak to a consultant and guess what, sorry sir but there is not fault recorded on our system, when I gave my referance number I was told it did not exsist. So she said she would place a new fault report.

This is totally unacceptable.
Firstly they advertise the line as being 2Mb/Sec
then they say that at optimal they will only reach 80% of this speed, depending on your distance from the exchange and number of users online.
My question then is A) if at best with no other users online and if directly connected to the exchange the best I could dream of is 1.6Mb/s (ie 80% as stated by Telkom themselves) which is an impossible situation for any user, why are they advertising it as 2MB, this is false advertising.
Add to this that their average speed on the 2Mb line (according to mybroadband and based on 9357 peoples results) is 1MB/s shows that we are all being taken for a ride, not only by Telkom but by the entire industry.

Would love to know how the new CPA protects us from this blatant miss leading advertising, and how it works in other countries regarding advertised speed vs real speed.

Check your day by day usage here - http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/ (click "back one month" at the bottom of the stats for Jan)

80% is pretty much right and as ADSL is a "best effort" best of luck with ASA/CPA.
