How does Afrihost bypass exchange issues? It's impossible because they only break out of the Telkom network after the IPC. That's when MTN fibre kicks in I believe.

Afrihost connects directly to mtnbusiness/mtnns, whereas Telkom connects to telkomadsl/telkom-ipnet. So it uses the MTN network rather than Telkom. That isn't to say Telkom can't throttle the hell out of their customers, and more IPC bandwidth may be required, just in many cases it is the cause of Afrihost being faster (or for me at least).

Forget what you see in trace routes. You have a Telkom line which is connected to a Distribution Point which is in turn connected to an Exchange which has a backhaul connection to the IPC.

If Afrihost were free of exchanges you wouldn't need a Telkom line to use Afrihost ADSL.

That's why I said "most" exchanges. Obviously excluding the first node and whichever ones it connects to.

That's my understanding of how things work. I might be utterly wrong.

I could feel delay/lag in Battlefield 4 tonight. My ping to teamspeak was between 200-500 but as always with this weird TI lag issue tracert reveals no delay.

To prove my point let me fire up my backup Afrihost account:
Wow, no high latency on teamspeak, no Battlefield 4 lag.
http://postimg.org/image/8utbktkib/

One can therefore not pin any of this latency on "Exchange congestion" or the likes.

great to know that i'm not the only one that feels the drop in speed since the weekend.....and no, it's not because of a lot of downloading, because my PC is more off than on due to heavy lightning and thunder in the area, rather safe than sorry when it comes to lightning and computers/routers etc...

What's the problem guys .. just logged on with my Telkom ISP account and look at those brilliant pings ?
Speed are so fast I didn't even notice the test finish so quickly.

Now , 2 minutes later after switching back to IS (web africa) account this

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3296958927

So let's go DoGaming on Telkom , with latency like that I will always win in a shooter match :)

ps it's a 4mbps line :)

Just an aside, a friend in the US told me that when Comcast started to block Netflix, many users saw similar behaviour from Comcast while they fixed up prioritisation on their network and blocked Netflix almost completely. Netflix generates an insane amount of traffic in the US and I imagine that the engineers in Telkom know that things will go belly-up if they open the floodgates to a local Netflix solution.

Also, I have to point out - Netflix's library is terabytes upon terabytes in size, they literally deploy a 4U server with 100TB of space for caching in some ISP networks. Centrally, that could be exabytes in size. What if they're setting up a local data center to deliver content to the rest of Africa? We're in the middle of several undersea cables, we have an incumbent SP that can swallow many of the costs thanks to government involvement and we have a FTTC implementation already running and working. It makes sense to deploy here than elsewhere in the continent.

Can we maybe just stop and think for a while with all this netflix speculation. It's not only netflix, it's all streaming, downloads etc. All traffic is affected.

What else can we do, though? Its not like anyone from Telkom will let us know why it's so ****ty since January. Comcast also falls under the scope as well, since apparently they've also been talking to Telkom and Naspers jointly.

I doubt Telkom would be stupid enough to throttle ALL USA data, not just Netflix.

Comcast has been terrible for years, as has Verizon, for streaming. They often appear in court with regards to why their customers have 100/10 speeds, but can't stream something as simple as Netflix. It's because it costs them a LOT of money, and they're scumbags -- as is every multi-billionaire company.

My immediate guess would be that the East coast cable is broken (again), however that wouldn't explain the speeds being fine at off-peak hours (unless it's causing the other IPC to be overloaded). I completely agree that we need a rep to actually communicate with us. It's like they're using sign language in front of a crowd of visually impaired individuals.

My Telkom Internets is working again this morning :D

Maybe Telkom is backing up Netflix to a local server, and thus why we are experiencing "lack" of capacity type problems ...

All I said was that it was working, how well I will only be able to determine when I get home this evening.

Last evening it was dead.

Afrihost flew ...

When I changed accounts this morning, I was able to retrieve my e-mails, which was not possible yesterday ...

Well go on over to Afrihost, they also having network wide problems now, maybe they are not as bad as telkoms but i can't wait, 17 days im never going to be seen in this thread again. Off to another ISP.

Is Telkom ever going to fix their ISP accounts can barely use mine anymore and have to use my afrihost one for browsing and gaming.

Can't even connect through team viewer. I'm not even arsed to know what's going on this time.

How is Telkom so far back in the dark ages when it comes to customer service? How is it not possible to cancel a service online, or via email? I'd even settle for fax at this point! No, you need to call a call center with 500 customer service reps standing by to take new orders, and maybe 5 for any other query!

Spent 40 minutes on hold this morning trying to get through to someone to cancel this account. Finally got through - was mid way through when the customer service (I'm assuming accidentally) hung up on me. She already had my details at this point, but didn't bother calling me back. So at this point, I had no way of knowing if the cancellation was going through or not, no reference number, nothing. So of course, I have to call back. 50 minutes (!!) later, I get through again, and go through the whole. Literally 20 minutes just to cancel an uncapped account. After it was done and I got the reference number, I hung up in disgust. Over 2 hours of my morning, just to cancel a damn account - which other ISPs let you do online, with the click of a button.

TI can fix their current crap, offer me an account at half of what other ISPs are charging or even offer free upgrades - there's no way I'm ever coming back for this bullsh*t again.

This is Telkom we're dealing with here. You know, the brainiacs who made Pinky leave.

I completely agree that we need a rep to actually communicate with us. It's like they're using sign language in front of a crowd of visually impaired individuals.

If that's the case, why not communicate this to customers? Why double everyone's speeds, turning TI into a mess because the network is not ready for that kind of load? Whatever it is, I'm fairly certain it means that we will never get the same service we were used to ever again.
