Here's something interesting. I had a go at netflix on twitter last night:

Hey @netflix @Netflixhelps why does your android tv app not work on my android TV box? I was about to subscribe, but now what's the point? (With a screenshot of error -13)

Response:
Thanks for the helpful info, we’ve got just the thing! https://help.netflix.com/en/node/100226 *BR

The page referred to says "Always install from the play store. You may need to clear out old data/cache etc. If you can't find the app in the play store then it's not compatible with your device, get a different one"

So I had installed it from the play store.

Lol you want me to buy a new device...? Fix your app. It's a certified android tv device. Everything else works.
Replying to @Netflixhelps
By the way, it's the first time I've installed on this device and the app was indeed in the play store.

The response:
Good news! Since you were able to download the app directly through the Play Store then that means it is a supported device! But if you are still having that issue, give our customer service a call and let's look into it further!

with a link to their CS site.

I guess I'll be calling them out on this this afternoon :D

Netflix Abegail G.

Thank you. Aside from -13 code, what is the exact message you see on your
device?
You

Netflix Abegail G.
She will contact our Technical research team now to get an advise :).
Netflix Abegail G.
I'll be back. Give us more minutes while we dig deeper.
You
No problem, thanks
Netflix Abegail G.
Great. Thank you.
Netflix Abegail G.
Thank you so much for holding. We've asses your device/brand here in our
end.
Netflix Abegail G.
The device you are using uses a version of Android that is meant only for
smartphones and tablets. Such being the case, there is really no guarantee
that it will work with Netflix.
Netflix Abegail G.
We can only advise for now if you can contact the device manufacturer to
get at least suggestions how to resolve the compatibility issue.
You
No, it's definitely android tv
Netflix Abegail G.
If they are not able to suggest any working fix, kindly use the Netflix
enabled device that fully support the service.
Netflix Abegail G.
I hope I have a different answer but it is pretty much it. The device
manufacturer of your Android TV is also not our partner unfortunately.
You
So your app isn't an android tv app. It's a device specific app?
Netflix Abegail G.
Oh. Sorry for the confusion. The app on your Android TV is only for mobile
not for TV's. We suggest you may consider getting a Smart TV, Samsung or LG
for example that has our built in apps that will really works.
You
Why does your mobile app appear in the android tv play store?
You
It says it's for Android tv
Netflix Abegail G.
That is only because of the device you are using now.
You
My android TV device.
Netflix Abegail G.
Yes.
You
It's definitely the native Android tv app
Netflix Abegail G.
The device you are using does not support our service to be direct.
You
Which doesn't work on all Android tvs. Right.
You
No, your service is not supporting a certified android tv device
You
You should stop saying it works on Android tv.
Netflix Abegail G.
I may not be able to turn things around for you at the moment, but please
know that I will have this feedback noted down for you. You can save this
link to see devices you can use for Netflix. : Click Here
<https://help.netflix.com/en/node/14361>
You
I quote from that page
You
You can stream Netflix from any Internet-connected device that offers a
Netflix app, such as gaming consoles, DVD and Blu-ray players, Smart TVs,
set-top boxes, home theater systems and mobile phones and tablets.
You
It's an internet connected set top box that offers a Netflix app.
You
According to your link it should work.
Netflix Abegail G.
My apologies, even if we go all over again we cannot change the fact that
the device you are using will not work with the service.
Netflix Abegail G.
I don't want to make this hard for the two of us.
You
Let's be direct, Netflix is making this hard.
You
Anyway, I'll just find a competing service that works. There's no shortage.
Thanks for your time
Netflix Abegail G.
We respect that. Thank you also for your time.
Netflix Abegail G.
Take care.

@Dolby they seem to want me to tell the mnfr to fix the device. What's the story with that?

As the Skyworth rep said in his thread, Netflix is the one making the process difficult. It's paperwork that's needed with many hoops to jump though.

Whats the benefit of this box over the Xiaomi Mi Box?

Mainly looking to use this to stream DSTV now, Plex and play local video off a USB hard drive.

Also considering Apple TV but the downsides seem to be cost and difficulty in playing local content.

I would say the advantages over the miBox:
- additional USB port
- Ethernet cable port
- From reports in the Mibox thread , below average wifi connectivity over long distances

So for your use case - playing local media off a hard drive - this could be an advantage
You also dont seem to need netflix, the LitBox doesnt do HD netflix streaming - so this is not a factor for you. But consider it should you wish to use netflix in the future.

Hope this helps
Cheers

@Sinbad that chat transcript made me think of BOFH... Thanks for nothing.

I thought of this as a competent little box, but my patience is wearing thin with it because of the following reasons:
Netflix support
Youtube freeze-a-roony
Plex audio loss from multi-channel files (using Plex for Kodi as a workaround)
Amazon Prime support

Ever since Multichoice launched DSTV Now on more devices, my ATV is outperforming this in every possible way.

Anybody interested in swopping my unLIT box for an ATV4?
