I would say the advantages over the miBox:
- additional USB port
- Ethernet cable port
- From reports in the Mibox thread , below average wifi connectivity over long distances

So for your use case - playing local media off a hard drive - this could be an advantage
You also dont seem to need netflix, the LitBox doesnt do HD netflix streaming - so this is not a factor for you. But consider it should you wish to use netflix in the future.

Hope this helps
Cheers
Thanks, I actually forgot to mention Netflix as I will definitely use that.

Looks like the lit box as well as the mi box have their downsides, as well as the ATV being restrictive for local content.

Will just have to figure out what functionality I'll be able to sacrifice.

Yup, there is no best... only best for you, they all have some or other downside/Upside

I dont know much about the skyworth box, except that it is also a certified androidTV box. maybe have a look at that one also.

Um.

Isn't that 3 times the price?

You may have those issues on all Android TV boxes though ?

Not quite 3 times, but it is more expensive, yes. It also has a significantly better remote control and just looks prettier, which is where some of the extra money goes, I suppose. It also gets regular updates and enhanced features, unlike Android boxes, it seems.

I cannot speak for all Android boxes, but I do favour my ATV over the LITbox I have.

I should hope so.

For what it's worth, my stepfather favours his Porsche over my Volvo too

I think I'd favour my Mazda over your Volvo, but that is neither here, nor there. You bought it, you'll use it. Like I (actually my wife) will do with the LITbox. :p

Chrome isn't available on any Android TV device (that's a Google thing - not a LIT box thing)

There are definitely browsers though
You can install chrome by logging into the play store and installing on the LitBox from there.

Then download tv app repo in order to get the tile on the screen.

I meant as standard (official) from the Play Store, no Android TV supports it

hi folks

sorry i've tried following this thread but i just seem to get nowhere.

i have a lit box, and i want to get all the free channels (hopefully netflix) and additional add on's
is there anyone on here that can load all the possible apps for me?? (i'll pay of course)
i just dont have the time or patience to figure out how to side load apps etc

for example i have downloaded kodi, but i still cannot get any channels (yes, i am doff when it comes to these things)
