I managed to buy one at Centurion Mall's Telkom today

How can I confirm what version of Android I have on the device? The blue sleeve around the box says Android 7.1.2 but if I go to Advanced Settings/Device/About is says version 6.01 with Android Security Patch Level of August 1, 2016

Software update says the current software version is the latest

I am missing something obvious?

I have a USB ir receiver for my openelec box already. I could try it I guess, was rather looking for the one that plugs into the IR port on the lit

Sinbad - the unit itself does have an IR receiver. But it comes with the dongle so didn't need line of sight

May be need to post elsewhere but wanted to get your opinion on LIT Box vs connecting an old tower or laptop to my tv with a wireless mouse/keyboard?

You want the old tower somewhere out of the way or in a cupboard or something running Plex Media Server.

Then any media player with the Plex Client.

Job done.
