Telkom may soon compete with DSTV

I'd never ever go with Telkom for TV, they'd probably put a bandwidth cap on your viewing and have constant technical difficulties. And SABC as a competitor to DSTV? How is that to differant to the current situation except that they'd obviously want more money for the 'service'?

I don't know, DSTV is horribly over priced and bloated but I don't think those other two would come near their market share.

i've been waiting for iptv for many a year, and when telkom media launch i'm probably going to be one of the first to suscribe.
i have no love for telkom, but they are begining to pull out all the stops for customer retention, and if this means more value added services... the happier i get.

lol well i welcome competition in the tv market. but with all the "local content" i think it is going to be like the africamagic channel on dstv...

To be honest I'd choose Telkom over Multichoice any day.

Haha. I agree with that 200%. Multichoice has been raping me for more than 2 yrs and weve decided to stop this month. Only thing good on dstv is the sport... which i will miss :( but it aint worth the cash

Rather wait for uncapped 16Mb/S DSL R150/M and watch online streaming.....Am I dreaming again? Back to bed......:D

Our involvement in the highly competitive pay television environment in South Africa and the significant material and financial commitments on our part underlines our absolute confidence in the continued economic growth and prosperity of our country,” says Wally Beelders." Am i missing something?

for a high definition stream you only need an 8mb line (cough), sd stream you need a 4mb line... which we will have soonish
and in any case there's no ways telkom can supply iptv with a 3gb cap. iptv suscribers will probably look forward to a min of a 30gb cap, if any.
the cost is the only problem

Perhaps ICASA shld tell them to first come to the party in thier current business(LOL if u could call it that)

Hey guys - do not be so quick to knock this service.

A friend of mine working for Telkom has some inside info on the planned service. Telkom has already secured the rights to reruns of the A-Team, TJ Hooker and Night Rider. Apparently there is talks of countering DSTV's sports line-up with reruns of the 1984-1993 Curry Cup finals (every night @ 10).

They are also planning to show the whole Police Academy series of movies for their first month's premiere slot!

I cannot wait!

hmmm, maybe i'm just the fool... but DSTV has had those shows on before..... and woop dee doo.... What people want is access to the new stuff, the good shows... and not channels with reruns over and over and over again... and also not 10 channels of sports that almost never get watched....

A few things like a decent Sci-fi channel, HBO, etc would put telkom in the lead, but if they just show reruns then no-thanks...

telscum will have to offer larger caps or uncapped account to offer the iptv

Wally Beelders gets my A-HOLE OF THE DAY AWARD for this statement:D

i'm sorry to say this but i dont think this SNO scares telkom in the least, telkom is so far ahead of the SNO its actually funny that someone is willing to try and compete with telkom. i'm hoping telkom will be quick to launch this "cabel tv" even if its crap to start with at least it will be better than my current sabc1,2,3 and e-tv :) (okay maby not better but at least more channels to flick through :) )

“Entry into the bouquet will be priced at a level that is favourable to the majority of South Africans,” Telkom said.

Indeed. It should only cost like R500p/m on top of your R600p/m ADSL ontop of your R100p/m copper line... Sweet, I will never use it.

I would rather get decent intenet and make use of overseas iTunes and so on (iTunes plans on selling videos as well)

Oh, my bad. They just offer you what you cannot even get in a cr@p video shop any more. You know, those shops where they dig the tapes out of a pile of dust...
