Telkom Night Surfer Data

Quick question for people whose speeds get throttled at night: are you using VPN services? I would like to take the 100GB R149 offer and using a relative's shared VPN service. It works as promised on my Cell C SIM (in addition to hiding my location, it has streaming, torrenting and download-specific modes). Would a VPN prevent this Telkom nonsense?

Impressive speeds! Wish I could get those. I took the attached image an hour ago. It's with no VPN. Totally unusable except for surfing. Apps taking forever to update. mybb telkom speed.jpg
After enabling YouTube streaming on my VPN, the videos are playing smoothly. I just watched a video and it didn't buffer once. But the speedtest while VPN is running shows similar results to these. I have not tested downloads or torrents with VPN.

What router what band are you using?
It's a huawei e5573b and I'm not sure of the other info. I set the APN to unrestricted to get it working.
This is with the VPN connection set to streaming from the US: Some time after 3AM my speedtest showed 10Mbps down and like 8Mbps up. Throughout the night, Youtube videos at 720P were flying, while normal downloads were slow.

Some night surfer speedtests on a Huawei H112.

Throttling and shaping confirmed. Sad.

I thought as much. My 100GB Night surfer seemed to have been set at 2Mbps, because once they started throttling it I never reached 10Mbps. Luckily I no longer need Telkom, nor their night surfer.

came looking for info on obvious throttling on Night Surfer and found this thread. Just adding my 2cents

This is from my phone. There's no VPN or anything, its literally the same test taken ~30 min apart; the first during Night Surfer period, the second outside.

It's highly annoying because I'm on a FreeMe family contract which is supposed to be unlimited, but its actually Unlimited 128kbps with only 100GB normal data per month. So I got 100GB Night Surfer data.

Anything less that 1Mbps should be illegal now because you can't browse ANYTHING at 128kbps in 2020. But the fact that I bought "normal" data and STILL getting throttled is also some BS

Same happens with me.
It's only about 1:30am that the throttling stops.
It's like clockwork.
I used a Night Surfer bundle.

East London LTE constant disconnects, very slow internet, switched to 3G for stability and better throughput

I got an update but it only relates to the bolt on 100Gb Night Time Data.

I got this from one of the helpful MBB journalists. This is after I have spoken to 3 Telkom consultants and had one of them come onsite to do a site investigation for over 2 hours, and they have still not managed to figure out the issue, despite me repeatedly telling them that it only happens with Night Time Data and only between 5 and 7 am.

I am also to blame for not looking at the FUP for the Night Time Data.

Ah well,live and learn. :)
I experienced that for the first time yesterday, frustrating. Why shape night data?
