Telkom problems started many years ago, reckons Cell C CEO

the only way out for telkom is to fire 20000 people.... but in this country... that would result in all sorts of things burning...

... so a rock and a hard place.

Ja I really don't get calls to quarter Telkom's staff or flob off 1k or 5k or 20k people here or there. Surely the annual staff bill is not nearly as big a deal as a lack of direction or multi-links or the 3 billion rand anticompetitive fine that could be lobbed in.

Lets accept that Telkom have double the staff than is efficient for Telkom, retrenching the lot will simply remove skills from the market. On the other hand if a proper staff reduction glide plan is adopted and we migrate Telkom staff to other ICT companies and departments we can actually get somewhere.

Both Telkom and SAA need to shed staff. SAA has over double the number of employees per aircraft than any other airline in the world. Telkom's problem is that there are insufficient trained technical staff to handle their business. Hiring more bean counters will not help matters

Well if they want a reason to fire a lot of people just hire AKC Junior, people will immediately start looking for new jobs and leave on their own.

Well really how about some clues AKC. All I read was: Decisions made long ago and current management should not be blamed. Well what are these decisions? As far as I am concerned its been a decades long comedy of error. I mean I did not start reading the news yesterday so I think I should know.

I would say about 10%. :D

:D:D:D Good one!!

But seriously, I think the average employee age is around 45, but may be less now.
These are generally folks who have been around for many years (20-30) and are getting fairly high monthly salaries.

So the wage bill to the company must be crippling and the level of return on productivity perhaps below expectation.

Even offering severance packages to a large group of these employees now, would probably run into many millions, which the company may not currently be able to afford.

As someone said......rock..hard place....:p

Thintana?

AKC's comments sound more like Telkom schmoozing than honest opinion. Might there be more going on behind the scenes than what he wants to admit?

If i see how many tech sit here at the exchange at the corner, month after month. They fix 1 issue per day... relaxed jobbie..

“We forget that some of the things which went wrong were initiated many years ago, and we should really be looking back to who the culprits were.”
Should we, Mr. CEO? What about the idea of moving forward constructively, instead of wasting more precious time on the past?

Telkom does not really have that much staff left. If you look at the size of the company nationally their staff compliment is not really that big. My thoughts are that they are top heavy to a degree, besides lacking direction & focus. And then you have gov interference which is really bad.
