Telkom/SAIX hosts speedtest server

Well done Telkom for hosting this server. I hope the Gauteng version arrives soon.

So what?

This wont make my internet any faster. It just means less latency to the speedtest server.

AT LAST. THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!! A LOCAL SPEEDTEST SERVER!!!

Wait...

WTF. Does anyone really care about this?

Previously it was not possible to Cape Town based speeds – now it is. This is a positive development, and although it will not bring the petrol price down it does not mean it is bad news…

@rpm

speedtest to jhb server = 90ms ping, 3.44mbs down, 0.38mbs up
speedtest to cpt server = 573ms ping, 2.4mbs down, 0.28mbs up

and im in somerset west

so the cape town(closer) speedtest server gives worse results than the JHB server...

so no, this doesnt actually mean anything

Testing your line speed is one thing. But in my personal experience having a decent line means f@rk when we have such poor routing.

@crazybob

odd... i wonder if its my afrihost account?

Either the server sucks or it's seriously getting hammered atm...ping of 300ms

Yes. Why wouldn't you? It's the best way to test the speed of YOUR line without putting another 6000+km of other possible factors in the way

i prefer to test to international servers in any event given that the vast majority of my traffic is not local

Cape Town

Johannesburg

I'm in Cape Town and I get a faster speed to Johannesburg lol

This is exactly what I am talking about - this new server may reveal some poor routing, connectivity problems and the like. It will certainly help the industry.
