Telkom soft-capping everyone now?????

Thanks Mick, been looking for this damn link everywhere.

It didn't feel like I was downloading 177 Gigs :D
All these Windows updates, Mortal Kombat X and StarCraft 2 installs...
My line got shaped just before I could see the benefit of upgrading it to a 4 meg line...

Also, you mention that you are not shaped and yet you downloaded more than 220 gigs for the month, What gives?
I schedule my downloads for the night surfer period (00h00-07h00) as it does not count towards the "softcap" amount.

I see TI Tracker has been updated, wonder if this has caused problems?

I've fired up a 50GB account that was sitting on 49.1GB and will check what happens when I get back from Sunday errands.

He's on a 4Mb/s package. Schedule all your big downloads, updates etc for 00:00-07:00 and you can easily do 200GB on a 2Mb/s account ;)

I phoned them a while back and told them that I would only go the 4mb route if they give me a 25% discount.
They told me that everything is fine and that I should wait a few days.
During the "few days", I got shaped so I'm not even sure if I am on 4mb now.

Do you play any online games with your 2mb account?
D3, SC2 and MKX is a no go for me on the 2mb line.

CS:GO

Games don't require fast internet, biggest thing is latency. Where are those game servers located?

Just for reference to you people suddenly realizing your usage is actually a bit high, I was on just 76GB according to SAIX...so very far from being very heavy and there was no reason why I should have ever been reduced to 0.3 MBps speeds unlike perhaps some of you.

Yea happened to me too , gave me the push to cancel with Telkom and move isp' s

Same here as well. Im in kzn and on a 4mb uncapped. Got the pop up saying that data usage has exceeded and i was throttled on thursday last week. Called the call center and was told it was the fair usage policy. I have not used a lot of data this month, i would about 90 gigs max. On sunday monring the speed was back to normal. And i dont get the pop up anymore. So reading this thread i see i wasnt the only one affected in kzn, what i would like to know if it is the fair usage policy or a problem on telkoms end. I have been with telkom for 4 years on an uncapped line and have never been throttled before

They did have issues with their overall international throughput for some reason so it could be that they were just rationing us in KZN during the problem. At least when my father called the call center he was told it was a side effect of the international problem Telkom had been facing last week and that there was indeed no reason why we should have been soft-capped yet. Thankfully it seems to have all been cleared up again though.

Am I missing something? I started getting shaped while under 200 GBs where some of you got shaped at 220.
Also, I am not sure if Telkom upgraded my line to 4meg or if I am still stuck on 2meg

Which is why the reboot fixed it.

There were some operational problems on Thursday in Durban affecting some users due to the transmission failures in Gauteng.

My ISP account information has changed since moving in March this year, so I can't produce actual tracking figures prior to using my current login for which I only have full-month stats as of June. I was soft capped in the latter part of August on a 2Mbps uncapped account - admittedly with the highest usage of the last 3 months at 160Gb. Until I found the SAIX stats page, I didn't think I'd used a tremendous amount of data, nor the most since using this login. Nevertheless I was still very surprised and unhappy when I finally realized I was being throttled. I will pay attention to data-intensive activities now though, and schedule where possible or restrict downloads and updates for the 'nightsurfer' window.

What I'm certain of but cannot prove for reference purposes is that prior to March, on the same package, I definitely used much more data (also at no particular schedule) for several months consecutively. I consider my August usage to have been upper-moderate, although how much that usage added up to was more than I would have guessed. At that rate, I shudder to think what my usage was before! The question is why are uncapped users seemingly only now being throttled? I had no idea my usage was beyond the AUP in the past.

So as a result I have to re-think how and when I use and do what on the internet. I settled for the slow-end 2Mbps line speed because of the peace of mind offered by using an uncapped package whilst attempting to keep the cost-burden as low as possible. Now I feel like I am on egg-shells and have to constantly check my usage. My choice in speed and data packages have become redundant, at least I feel it has - and for not too much more I can get a 10 meg 50 Gb softcap with nightsurfer package and with mindful data-consumption management, easily use much more data at up to 5x my current speed.

I have a few questions if anyone knows the answers here - what is the upload speed for a 10mbps ADSL line, and what are both the up/down speeds when soft-capped on the same line on the 50Gb soft cap package?
