Telkom Speed Upgrades

The upgrade takes effect from August 31. Telkom internet will do their uncapped guys by the 31st. Capped to be announced at a later date but one will assume post the 31 August so within 2 months. This is obviously on Telkom Internet. It is however a general speed increase 2m to 4m, 4m to 8m, 8m to 12m etc. If you rent an ADSL line from Telkom you get the free increase. Not sure what happens if your line is controlled by your ISP but I assume they will have to pass it on. The free speed increase will be rolled out country wide. Ironically this is the first time the free-upgrades have been shrouded in such mystery. I literally had to ask the same question 20 different ways before I got a complete answer from Telkom staff on their facebook page. The kept indicating it is linked to their uncapped bundle service. "When general line upgrades are done, they are for every customer regardless of isp. ^Frank" was the final word. Even the Techcentral article implies it is Telkom only deal.

Telkom Facebook changed their mind again apparently the free line speed upgrades are only for Telkom Internet users. However unless they subsidize the cost even if it is only a journal entry they cannot charge me more for the same line speed than they charge their own customers.

Contacted telkom. The free upgrades will take place on 31 Aug. those on the promo 4Mbps are eligible should our exchanges be able to handle it. And we'll pay the same price which is R 599. Hoping for the best

R599 for 4mbps?

I just upgraded near beginning of Month from 2 to 4 MB Uncapped
On status I am on 6.25 MB
Telkom doing as good as there word.

So much confusion... I wish mybroadband would do a follow-up article to explain all the gaps.

Will everyone be getting the upgrades or only Telkom subscribers?

Will a router automatically sync at the new speed or must the router be reset?

It will jump to the new speed during the night, usually at 12 to 2 am when all adsl lines are reset for usage / billing purposes.

Ok, thanks. I check my router stats waiting for the upgrade every now and then.

It will be for the lucky few, as a lot of us the exchanges cannot handle faster than 4 megs.

R599 for 4mbps?

If you are an existing customer, you'll pay R 599 for 8 or 10Mbps when the upgrade is done. Price will not change. So if you had the uncapped promo for R599, you'll be upgraded while still paying the same price. This is per telkom contact centre which confirmed this twice.

The big question is who is subsidising the line speed increase .Why should I pay the same price for a 4mbps as someone on the promo who is getting 8mbps. We both are customers of Telkom? Telkom need to explain and I still cannot understand why MyBroadband has not asked them to explain?

I'm currently on 10mbps line.

any idea what I will be paying after upgrade price? my area only support 10mb so hoping for cheaper price.

I must be missing something here. Existing customers will be upgraded or their bill will be changed. They will be migrated to the new packages from the 31st of this month from the article that I've seen. I might be wrong, but that is what I've read.
