Telkom staff offered voluntary severance packages

So basically letting the 50 year old slackers go LOL

Usually the opposite, the young bright ones leave while the not so bright guys stay & the old guys hang on for their pension time.

Telkom staff offered voluntary severance packages

Telkom’s non-management staff are offered voluntary severance packages, but management has the right of refusal

What does that mean? Can management "veto" a non-manager from taking a severance package if they realize this person can actually do the work? Sounds a little unfair. How can you even call that "voluntary" then?

So if no one takes the voluntary deal [and no one is allowed to] then they move over to involuntary retrenchment and then what? Are they even allowed to retrench you then? (assuming they refused you from taking voluntary retrenchment)

I think it means Management can refuse to take a package that's being offered?

Well that doesn't make sense at all, "voluntary" means per definition "you don't have to take it" . Why would you call it "voluntary" if you can't refuse? It means non-management can also refuse.....hence why it sounds to me like management can prevent non-management from taking the package if they think the person is of critical importance...

This implies the "voluntary" is only applicable to people who are not considered important/critical/core .

I suppose it's probably standard policy, but i would be upset if i want to take the voluntary package and some manager says i can't , and then 3 months later they retrench me involuntary because no one took voluntary package.

Sweetened deal

They did same recently at our company...Offer sweetened voluntary packages, but with the warning that if not enough staff members take the voluntary package, they will have to move to "normal" retrenchment, which meant 1 week's pay per year of service...thus basically half of what the sweetened deal amounted to. But they also added the "we can decline your application" crap...
This way they can lure the non-key staff into voluntarily jumping ship... So what happened? Just about everyone handed in their applications! It was a nice litmus test to see if the company thought you to be a key staff member.

Thankfully ? I passed the test :)

Regarding managerial right of refusal maybe you guys should actually read the article before commenting:

"Telkom explained that the latest staff offering is purely a voluntary separation package, but it is understood that management has the right the refuse the application from an employee."

True, but I dont think Telkom has any young bright guys in there...

Telkom would be able to upgrade their infrastructure if they would spend less time on who gets how much money and actually concentrate on what they should be doing like giving us decent cables and equipment.

Just worried about their fat cats having enough to eat. Scum

You wouldn't happen to work for Nashua Mobile, would you?

+1

The wrong people are being let go.

The people that do the real work are retrenched, while the managers stay behind to read the newspaper during the day.

"Too many chiefs & no indians".

You'd be suprise how much "bright young guys"there is ..I always get compliments from clients, however we so sick of being taken for granted we just decided stuff them.. In my division more than 90% has taken the option to take the package all sub 35 years of age!

Basic F%$k you to my boss!

Explain "taken for granted"?

You go to work (eg 8am to 5pm), always have work and get a fairly decent salary with benefits in comparison with the rest of the telecoms sector. Your union has ensured that you will never be retrenched, so you have job security.

You have ample opportunities to upskill yourself (for free) and in your employer's time.

What more do you want?

Ah, so Telkom's "asset stripping and general disintegration" program continues unabated.

Will anyone be left to fix my line? When coding, I'm now using "ping" as a random number generator.
