Telkom still do adsl resets

Seriously though.. thats just a bit overboard especially considering its only the 7th.

I just don't know where they put all the stuff! The unfortunate fact is that there are the odd few that will do what they can until someone HAS to put something in place to limit it.

I wonder how far he will get to this month.

Well he is already looking at a >2.5k bill....

Hmm Actually... My wife has been video conferencing non stop with her supervisors in the USA lately

<--- Rushes home to pull out the router

Unless you are unbelievable over your limit - it is unlikely you will get a bill.

I'm on WA prepaid... so luckily for me... no chance of that happening :D

But she did phone me earlier today and ask me to please top up the account as she had used up the last gig I bought her yesterday

I know you're here in your personal capacity but could you share with us how the TI billing department determine who will be charged and who won't? I'm assuming they only bill after a user exceeds his cap by x percentage, be it 30%, 60%, 80% etc....

To tell you the truth - all I do is provide the accounting statistics and implement the business processes. What the billing people do is not only not really my concern, but in all likelyhood, I would doubt that they would be entirely sure of what it is they are doing sometimes. But even if I did know, I think that it would be defeating the purpose by giving out that information...

My advice is do what you think is right and you will be ok. If you use 100Gb over your usage limit by the seventh day - then expect a bill, because that is taking the p1ss.

This is exactly what I wanted to point out. Surely you can't just charge certain users and not others, since everyone exceeds their limit, but then again, it's not everyone who goes really far over the limit. From what I've seen, my guess is that 100GB is the limit. If you so much as go a little over it, the system detects it and these users and they get charged accordingly.

Our friend has now done 150Gb local ...
waits for the end of the month post that says "WTF Telkom just sent me a R6k invoice"

While I do think its funny in a way, couldn't an email be sent off warning the person. Could be that somebody has hacked their wireless and they have no idea?

Exactly. They don't send warnings/notifications or anything for that matter. It sounds a lot like entrapment.

ffs... entrapment. Come ashore... Ever user has access to both the SAIX and TI tracker/usage tools - They can also sign up for email notifications.

Now we must be babysit every user? If they don't use any of the above then who's fault is that? If they cannot protect their machines, then who's issue is that.

For all we know and is most likely the case - the person knows exactly what he is doing.

A broadband user is responsible and liable for the use of his own internet usage. So if you get hacked, your problem. You used crappy or no security.

Please don't address me in such a rude manner (seems typical if you're working for Telscum) and please do your research before making ridiculous statements. I have subscribed to the email notifications and it only reports back on international usage. It does not alert the user as to the amount of local bandwidth used. If you want to attack users verbally, well then I guess you're on the wrong forum. Stop defending your company's poor business ethics.

Granted.. but for a company that is trying to "clear its image" A warning email would be seen as something of akin to a step in the right direction of helping its customer base, rather than shafting it.

I still find it strange that the email notifications make no mention of local usage. Moreso given the email doesn’t even provide a link where you can check your usage. I only found out about the TI Tracker after coming onto this site.

How did you expect a response to look? Entrapment? Seriously?

I will respond to any post as I see fit and in any manner I see fit. You started this jibberish by saying that because Telkom is allowing a user to use the internet in any way he likes - Telkom is 'entraping' the user.

That has to be the biggest load of pig swill. What kind of company uses entrapment as a legitimate business ethic. I suggest sir that you go and do a little research of your own.

TI complies to the ICASA ruling that states local usage is not subjected to being capped. So what we have done is implement a VERY lax local usage policy and have provided numerous ways on how a user can keep tabs on their usage. -

I really should not have responded to the 'entrapment' bait. But sometimes people just like to score social points by b1tchin about Telkom.

You say that I am defending my company's poor business ethics - thats not what I am doing here. I here just out of personal interests and I just wanted to highlight the ridiculous nature of your statement.

So get off your high horse.

There is a link on the www.telkomsa.net website to check your usage. You can also use the SAIX usage tracker. Failing that you could - god forbid - call the helpdesk...
