these offerings may be faster than dial-up, but you can download more with dial-up. if only dial-up was allowed for 24 hours a day :(
 
so they going to redo their entire infrastructure? because they got alot of faulty crap out there. and with neotel laying fibre i hope they do to

Yes, once again we are reminded how Telkom have ripped us off for so long! :mad:

As soon as another network upgrades their speed, Telkom can "suddenly" upgrade their line speed.

Now with Neotel coming out, expect them to "suddenly" have a lot more bandwidth!! :sick: :mad: :sick: :sick:

They have been keeping prices artificially high and line speeds low to make as much money as they can from dial-up and ISDN customers!

This is why I am switching to Neotel as soon as they roll out services in my area.

Your wish may just yet be granted, they are doing away with 384Kb lines but the jump isn't to 1mB it is 512kb i think, which is kewl in some way the 1mb line is being reserved for the current 512kb user.

My opinion upgrade your line if you want faster speed.. but its your choice again

Where you situated about, I am in cape town we get get our lines with in a week or two. Self install is the fastest option. Takes a few Business days or something. I did 19 self installs already is extremely quick. Why are you waiting two months...

When i got my line two years ago i thin the waiting time was 6 weeks, but i applied the monday and the line was in by friday running at 4mbs (4mb just came on trial at that time). I don't get why people say the waiting time is so long.

Neotel laying firbre, but neotel won't be ready for commercial dsl for a while. There infrastructure still not in place. Telkom is going to redo thier infratructure cause they have to, thier copper based dsl line are failing and do have a limitation (someone correct me if i am wrong). To support ADSL2+ they need the upgrades, they want to hit 24MB Lines, i am beginning to think they are starting to listen to thier customers (Very very hopefull i know).

But we in SA with telkom in control still, even though neotel exsists, so the best thing we can do is sit back and see if they can deliver

It can't all be reserved for business use. Round about when did they tell you this? Personallu i think you should take the matter up again. I think there is a regulation in the ISCA (not sure if that the right accronum) which states you can't wait that long for a dsl line.

Try again, and tell them is a load of bull.

Now that does sound a bit scary. What these 'people' and use that term liughtly, do and what they should be and what they can do is entirely a different matter all on it's own.

Or maybe so that it syncs at whatever speed it can above 4mbps?

Some of us could probably already get the 8mbps, and they have said that they will need upgrades in any case.
 
Cap aside, they're going to have to consider adjusting (doubling? removing?) that sneaky 50kB/sec speed cap they have on some browsing (or am I the only one?)

Otherwise, there's really no point if the only time you actually achieve line-speed is when you are on speedtest.net! :D They should rather concentrate on bringing international access up to current line-speeds...
 
I haven't read all the responses yet, so this might have been covered... but wouldn't it be nice if Telkom actually hauled up everybody with this speed increase?

When 1Mb was pulled up to 4Mb, 512Kb and 384Kb were simply left where they were...

Well, I'm not holding my breath... :rolleyes:

That's on most international single threaded downloads. Browsing is "multi-threaded" so most of your browsing goes above 50Kb. You're not the only one though, it's frustrating for Rapidshare etc. free services and some video downloading places.

You still get full speed on almost all downloads (with more than 1 thread) and heavy browsing.
 
Correct, Ekhaatvensters. I use a download manager for anything that I can, but as you say, for web sites such as YouTube, the video is essentially a single thread and so is magically limited to 50kB/sec.

I generally just open up multiple tabs of stuff, which allows me to utilise more of my available speed. However, it is still extremely irritating that there seems to be that throttling going on at all. Definitely should not be there. We pay enough for our bandwidth for them to not shaft us by throttling speed. Then again, we're talking about Telkom. We should be happy with the little we get...
