Telkom Uncapped?

If Telkom does, I hope they offer competitive rates, coz they will definitely have the capacity and facilities to offer uncapped ADSL at lower than the current market rates... It may be a good thing for us the consumer!

Perversely enough they can only do this if their Retail division dumps SAIX and buys bandwidth via IPC like the other ISPs, as it is cheaper!!! Obviously it will be more heavily contended (like other ISPs) as they will be paying the same IPC prices, but they can sweeten the deal by bundling it with other goodies.

or they ditch the whole "interconnecting" rubbish and just let people plug in for nada... if you think about it... it's the only thing they can do!

So what about the supposed line speed increases we've been promised? :D

Will believe it when I see it, not a minute before.... and that's just because we've gotten our hopes up once too often.

The important part of that article for me was that mweb is profitable.

Sent from my apple stomping, berry crushing droid! Samsung Galaxy S.

hmmm,

i wonder if they will

I've been waiting for someone to spot that. Nicely done.

Uncapped being "doable" is profound in the big scheme of things. If they can do it with IPC costing SO much it certainly bodes well for the future. :)

If Telkom do that, they most probably give uncapped local, which is not really bad but there is a lot of people that don't know how to use it.

Strategically I think we'll see Telkom roll this out prior to local loop unbundling. They will be in a sorry state if they don't find a way to be competitive on the broadband front after LLU goes ahead.

If that happens I'll eat my hat...... I'm an optimistic person so I'll look around in sweet shops for edible hats just in case

Telkom must currently have a surplus of international capacity on SAT3 and EASSY so it would surely make economic sense for them to start selling it. Many of the large ISPs such as MWeb, IS are now using Seacom rather than SAT3 to supply the bulk of their requirements.

True but as mentioned, since the time when Seacom came online, the capacity constraints have not been on the international side.

The majority of contraints continue to be on Telkom's ADSL access network at the local & regional level i.e. backhaul circuit capacity & ESR routing horsepower. Unless this infrastrucuture is seriously upgraded, Telkom's own ADSL services would also be subject to these same contraints.

For example my home ADSL connects to a DSLAM in the Fourways exchange. Since there is a shortage of ESR capacity in northern JHB, my particular DSLAM is uplinked to an ESR in New Germany KZN (600Km away). From there, once decapsulated from PPPoE, my packets are routed back up to another ESR in JHB where they are fed up the IPC links of my provider.

This situation can only be the result of poor forward capacity planning & investment.

maybe telkom would provide uncapped by 2030... till then they would milk us. remember they're own largely by government. and the gravytrain is getting so long and big....
