Not according to Telkom.
CW contacted them multiple times and they said that if I am on 20Mb speeds then I am on VDSL.

Had exactly the same problem. Most Telkom call-center support staff is clueless that you can now get a 20Mbps ADSL2+ service. In the end I contacted the MyBB forum member TelkomZA to sort it out. The big difference is that on 20Mbps ADSL the max upload speed is 1Mbps and on 20Mbps VDSL it is 2Mbps. But with a download/upload ratio of 20:1 the 20Mbps ADSL2+ is useless.

If you guys need more upload speed, would it not better to look at something like LTE? Latency wise it really isn't as bad as I would have thought :)

Of course, but LTE is ridiculously expensive compared to VDSL

Plus VDSL is capable of matching LTE but telkom limits it.

We upgraded my Dad's line from 10Mb to 20Mb and I too had to call them to change it over to a VDSL profile (they had left it on ADSL2+ and closed the call).
The stats on 10Mb were quite good with an attenuation of 20dbm (SNR 22db)... now we can only sync at 14Mb, and the attenuation has shot up to 63dbm (SNR 8db) - how the heck is that possible.

I agree that talking to them has no impact... they have no idea what I am saying when I tell them that it is not possible to have those crappy stats now... not like we picked up the house and moved it further away. Now they are TELLING me that it's not possible to have VDSL coz I am too far from the exchange - they really have no clue :(

Do you have different stats when they put you on back on adsl2+ 10meg, maybe they moved you to a faulty port.

Reading through those links made me think, how bad Telkom is in predicting future trends, I will quote some highlights out of context, but well within purpose of this post.


Russia: VDSL appeared on 8 February 2005

Slovenia: VDSL appeared on 1 October 2005. It is provided by T-2, offering triple play services with Internet speeds ranging from 1 Mbit/s:256 kbit/s (€16) to 60:25 Mbit/s (€73) at more than 120 locations across the country (75% coverage). A 40:15 Mbit/s connection costs €63 per month

Spain: VDSL roll-out by Telefonica began in 2005 in selected places in Madrid. Commercial launch up started on September 2009 (combined with free national telephone calls and TV-over-IP service)[25] and December 2009 (combined with free national calls).

Switzerland: DSL service with up to 50 Mbit/s downstream and 5 Mbit/s upstream, introduced with lower bitrates in November 2006. The city of Zurich had a vote about putting Fibre (and not VDSL) infrastructure in place in 2007 which was approved by the voters.

Turkey: Turk Telekom offers VDSL2 services for resale by Turkish ISPs as of July 1, 2008 across 73 of Turkey's 81 provinces. Packages ranging from 20 Mbit/s download/1 Mbit/s upload to 100 Mbit/s download/1 Mbit/s upload speeds are available.

Australia: iiNet began trialing VDSL in Perth in December 2008 offering 100 Mbit/50 Mbit speeds


Then our South Africa

South Africa: Telkom announced which 3 areas would receive the new 20 Mbit/s and 40 Mbit/s VDSL services by March 2013.

did you do the test?

do a ping to 8.8.8.8 and run a speedtest wait till starts uploading. 10mbps line. so thats 1mbps upload.

Packet loss. now can you imagine this constantly if you upload to something like dropbox or google drive?

pretty much same thing happens on VDSL. I have spoken to telkom techs and network specialists and they are aware of this. but yes Telkom doesnt really care for uploaders as they want people to host servers etc from there datacentre etc.

The problem above is not a Telkom problem, it is a lack of QOS on your side. When you saturate any network link you going to get packet loss. Above you are saturating upload and you have no QOS, this will even happen on fibre if you have no QOS
