telkom WiMax

just out of curiosity

how are you getting wimax
i called telkom last week about it and they told me the service is on hold at the moment

Dunno why they would say that. I cant get a line at my place cause they need to lay more cables in my area (or something), so i requested WiMax and i got the green. Should get my WiMax through telkom in the next month.

I have telkom wimax, phone and "adsl".

Due to cable theft telkom pitched up at my door one day and installed the wimax antenna and took the line down.

Works exactly the same as the line except there is an antenna and a router instead. Billing is the same, but there is only a 512k adsl option.

There was no install fee.

Nice, holding thumbs for early installation. :)

Why are you still paying for line rental? You should only be paying R240 for the wimax and then R299 for mweb...

No, the telkom "do" package has the bandwidth in. I just have the calling "closer" package.

You can't ATM. Those who already have Telkom Wimax had it before they put it on hold. From what I've been told they ran out of stock of the units in 2009 already. Then the contract with the 3rd party expired and they decided not to renew it and train people internally to do the installations and setup. Then 8ta came along. So I really doubt they'll continue with Wimax (I found the service quite stable...even better at some points, as my ADSL)

But with Telkom there's too many chiefs and no indians... so it's really hard to tell when this service will launch again for new signups.

haha Acid!

Well 1 thing i would like to see is a faster connection, but i would take stability over download speed any day

If you manage to get Telkom to install the wimax please post here and let us know because I've had voice over Wimax since 2009 ( we had the same cable theft issues and telkom just stopped replacing them). I phoned them the other day and they refused to activate the data portion of the line saying that they no longer install wimax at all.

Been so damn frustrating trying to get the facts from them, because i've been told they no longer do NEW installations but even though i've been on wimax since 2009 they still refuse to enable the data portion our line.

Also heard that you can have a 4 meg line from the technical guys but the marketing guys are adament that 512 is max.

Please let me know if you manage to get it installed.

Thanks :)

My voice and 384k adsl was converted to wimax this year due to cable theft. They said there was only 512k data available. The techie said 4mb is possible, but they only do 512k from the marketing side.

well now i have a funny story...

So telkom came out this week to install my WiMax but it turns out that the when telkom 1st did the survey at my place the didnt do a good job. They only checked where my nearest base station was in relation to my house and assumed it was fine, completely missing the nice big school blocking my line of site...

So they werent able to install the WiMax, but i guess the flip side was that they were forced to check the cabling in my area and are now going to upgrade the cable in my area to handle more.

K this is my experience with Telkom:

Its very much russion roulette when u call in, depending on who u call will depend on what u will get (if that makes sense). For example, the 1st time i called in they werent offering wimax but the 2nd time they were and my order was put through and at the same time i was offered both data and phone. Another example, when i was following up on my order the 1st few times people couldnt find my order and i was put through to various departments and also asked to call different numbers. So in other words got given the run around...
But after speaking to the right person i was given the techies number and was able to follow up directly with him.

Point of this story is not to give up, push for the service u after. Get the names of supervisors or managers (thats what i have done) and harass them till u get what u want, its the only way. This is even what the techie told me, if u dont push the guys are lazy and wont do anything sad i guess... monolopoly FTW.

There are so many competant people in Telkom but even more useless

Wimax is a discontinued offering in most regions, although Telkom will maintain those in service. The alternative is a Telkom Mobile network (WCDMA and not 8ta) as a replacement to theft of cables in some areas, or a mobile network service. I agree on becoming a pest when you don't recieve service, that is the only way to get results.
