The introduction of competition was supposed to reduce prices, increase speeds and improve service. The problem is that the fixed line competition do not want to compete...

What about mobile broadband? They are also competition that have no reliance on Telkom. Why are their prices so high? I suppose that's telkom's fault as well?

Questions - really just out of interest - Telecoms are behind ethiopa and mali in what way? Have you lived there? Have you ever been a telecoms customer in these countries?

Anyway, you still haven't answered my previous question about an ISP that will offer you more for your rand?

Neotel has STILL done more in 3 years than Telkom did in 10. And Neotel had an uphill battle.

But eh, this doesn't bother me. Because I will be in the UK at the end of this year ;) Sitting with my beautiful 20mbps cable and 125 channel TV via the glory that is Virgin Media :P

I still find Telkom's attempt at web 2.0 with a 3 gig cap laughable and ridiculous... But oh, I'm drifting off topic again ;)
 
Well seeing as bonobo_slr is from the UK, I can't understand him defending Telkom knowing that the UK offered something 10 times better at a much better price.

Maybe this rant of mine should stop right here..

You make me laugh.

Last time i checked there were only TWo countries in the WORLD that cost more than Telkom...This might have changed recently but we are still waaaay more expensive than other countries.

An ISP that will offer more for your rand? I answered this question. I am saying that this is bad for the telecoms situation in this country. It is the monopoly using its position to force other ISP's out of the market and maintain it's position.

But, if you insist, and ISP that offers more for your money - WebAfrica. Seeing as Tlekom still refuse to provide free local bandwidth, you can get it from them for a great price and they also offer a strange thing called service. Working for Telkom you may not be familiar with this term, but I assure you that it is important when it comes to chosing an ISP.

As for mobile broadband, I never said anything about that, nor about Telkom's role in it in this country, if indeed it does have a role. That is not the issue at hand. The issues are landlines and ADSL. The only way to get these remains TELKOM.

Having worked on both sides in the ISP arena, I know what the differences are. In london you can have any size of pipe you want practically delivered to your doorstep because - wait for it... London is an international bandwidth HUB...

Unfortunately in ZA we are not a bandwidth hub, therefore greatly reducing the amount of international bandwidth coming in and out of the country.

Do some research. Check how much ISP costs are in say a country in a similar geographic location as ZA. NZ for example - a typical dsl line with 5Gb limit costs the equivalent of about R300 not including telephone line rental. So that is comparable to ZA - if not, more expensive.

I defend Telkom not only because it is my place of employment, but because I know that the simple fact is you cannot compare ZA to UK. Simple as. You must be totally dumb to even think it. Also you just cannot have what is not physically possible.

But anyway - there will be no doubt the usual rant about how its Telkom's fault that the kiwis are being ripped off as well.... so I will leave it at that.

.. And yes, I saw that it was Cable ;) While not uncapped 40GB is still nice and the price is great.

Next, DSL - just because I'm waiting for the "But that was cable!" argument.

Company: Worldnet
Plan Name: MegaPass 3.5M Pro 30
Type: DSL
Speed: 3584/512 (Not far from SA speeds, eh? And keep in mind that the upload's at least faster)
Cost: $109.95 = R564 (wow.. expensive, eh?)
Cap: 30G (not as big as the cable, but still)
$1.00/GB = R5.17 per GB.

My point? We STILL pay more, for less.

In fact, let me point out the most expensive one:
Comapny: Orcon
Plan Name: Advanced 200
Type: DSL
Speeds: 3584/512
Cost: $309.95 = R1 599
Cap: 200G
Overcharge/After Cap: $2.00/GB = R10

So, 40 GB caps are affordable, 50GB caps are affordable, and if you want a 200GB cap, that would also be affordable, especially considering it's only R300 more than what I paid Telkom last month.

The numbers speak for themselves. And all conversions were done via Google and under the guise of New Zealand Dollars.

Well bite me for actually wanting us to be comparable to UK. Nobody gives a crap whether London is an international BW hub or not, the fact is that (for whatever reason) we are subjected to 1Gig caps that get finished in a day or 2, THAT's the problem. I wouldn't mind paying what I pay now if the only thing extra I could get is maybe a nice 30Gig cap, (free local also). ;)
 
Stats101 on taking samples:Samples are expected to be selected in such a way as to avoid presenting a biased view. (as per NZ vs SA discussion)

don't take company X from NZ and company Y from wherever and tell us they directly compare with Telkom when X and Y have much much more above and below as choices..

my Stats Prof. would have given u (telkom rep) 1/50 for that research!

Oh well, lets be honest here, telkom arnt that good in terms of there pricing. But, lets not give bonobo a hard time because of it. He cant really do anything anyway, you may as well call 10219 and ask them to give you a better deal.

Does NZ pay line rental x 2? Or x 3 (as dsl line rental is double pots line rental?)
