TelkomInternet not hard-capping its ADSL service

I have a question then.

Say 10,000 users use 30,000 Gigs, so 3 Gig average. But 5000 only use 2 Gig that leaves 5000 Gigs spare to say, why not share the access with those that need more? instead of just hard capping? Everyone should be happy surely? Or am I missing something?

It's amazing that out of the over 350 guests that are on MyADSL that not one of them is a legal person of some sort and willing to help out.

Or for that matter a journalist with the balls to take Telkom on , How can this not be a lead article, is it advertising revenue? This isn't really just about broadband anymore.

(apologies to Ian Fraser who did write a great commentary on Telkom for M&G)

Also what is amazing is that no Telkom employees or insiders send any info about this to help out. PLEASE people send info to [email protected] - any mail received is 100% confidential - there is *nothing* to worry about so don't be afraid of Telkom suing you or firing you.

And given Telkoms incompetence - and inability to distinquish between local and international traffic - I strongly doubt they are going to trace your emails.

If youre paranoid, mail from here (http://www.advicebox.com/replybox/index.jsp), from a friend's internet.

Doesn't Hellkom have a web-submit box somewhere? Put it up! (with some image verification if you must..)

Although... I fear, that... the honest truth is, that we know more than most Telkom employees. Hence - everything.

Yes, you're missing the Santa-claus-outfit-wearing Telkom director.

The competition commision is just that ... a commision. This means they adjudicate cases brought before them, and have the power to impose penalities (usually financial) to enforce their judgements.

This does not however mean that they themselves actively indentify and investigate anti-competitive behaviour ... someone need to bring a case before them. To go after the likes of Telkom will require this someone to invest a few millions in investigative & legal fees to build and see through a case stong enough to force Telkom to change.

So saying that the competition commision is just going to 'nail' Telkom over the hard/soft capping issue, is a bit of an over-simplification.

thats what ive been saying ISP should be doing instead of hardcapping. If telkominternet can and will, then let them do this. Other ISPs can also do this to if they manage their bandwidth well. Its the different available choices that makes competitive environment. Competitive environment doesnt means everyone has to offer exactly the same thing, it just means that they have to play under the same rule. Now to prove telkominternet's playing under a different rule, you'll have to prove that (totalbandwidth used) > (no of user * bandwidth allocated to each ).

Sigh, this is like the 5th time i post this. Oh and if you are wondering.. i'm NOT working for telkom or telkominternet or saix or any other entity trading under the same vat no.

10% of the users use 80% of the bandwidth. A common thing, and probably to be avoided by most networks.

i agree, but hardcapping everyone isnt a good solution for this. People go over from time to time. A good solution would be to deal with those 10% without having to hard cap the rest.

Everywhere they compensate by speeding up the networks. They then by exception sort out the goonys only if required. TELKOM penalise everybody with their exuse, which is obviously a lie out of just pure greed and exploitation. NOTHING ELSE. The view of international experts, Icasa and everyone else agreed that TELKOM is the sole reason for the economic woes of ZAR, but what do they do. Support them in their fraud by allowing 1 November. Now ALL of them is silent. WHY WHY WHY???? because they are all in cohoots with each other??? I think so, and wont be surprised if the SNO is just going to join the gravy train too. Kickbacks???, We will reserve the right to be wrong, but will hate to have to tell you I told you so !

Pope24 - That is the whole point. Do you really think for one second TelkomInternet does not hardcap, but simply pay SAIX for all the bandwidth ( at R70 per GB) used above the allowed 3GB cap.

Say for instance that 1,000 of TelkomInternet's 10,000 ADSL clients use broadband for its intended purposes and clock 103GB per month with their 3GB account. Do you think TI will pay SAIX almost R7,000,000 per month extra ( 1000*100*R70) to cover the additional bandwidth used. Nope - didn't think so.

The reason is because they receive preferential treatment from the uncompetitive provider SAIX.
Franna.. Why not?

It's like I (As personal entity) say I'm going to pay myself (As personal entity) R100 000. How much did it cost me in real terms??

R0

What Telkom will probably do is pay itself exhorbitant amounts for TelkomInternet Bandwidth, write TelkomInternet off as making a loss and take all that money as profits or for use somewhere else, although i'm pretty sure that constitutes some kind of fraud.

You are trying to make the current setup work like putty. The truth is that there is no way to squeeze this thing right. We are being ripped off by Telkom. End of story.

Telkom would rather have spare capacity than provide better customer service.

That is why.

Which is probably what they have. International peering is not that expensive anymore. THAT is why all other countries have affordable, fast internet.

The joke is that is what TELKOM now is doing and what they proposed in the RAdio interview. See this telkom comment when I asked How? when I was told everything is going to improve for the better, Am I wrong?

Well the usage option has just kicked in and most [no I fib, all ISP] are blaming Telkom for the hard cap and then we [TI] went and did a shared option based on average so hence the late reply as I have been fielding mails about how we cant do it with a almost no cap service due to mom's a pops not using their full allocation etc etc, so it's been fun while I justify how we will do it until the average gets above 3 Gig that is and then we are just another hard capping ISP.

Also got the update on SHDSL and the new xDSL technologies and what we can do over the true broadband services, so things are very very busy here, did the trail things with MS and their IPTV model and xBox, just so much happening.

You guys are missing an important part here , Telkom will lable the guy as an "abuser" and not take it seriuosly at all , they will just say this is the reason why we have a hard cap , cos people abuse the system . That said , even with all that b/w eaten does NOT mean he was doing anything illegal !

Who knows what spin telkom would put on it though .

Let's see. Various threads have referred to peering point problems between SAIX and other tier one providers.

If peering doesn't take place then the traffic is sent via overseas links, i.e. "expensive undersea fibre" (per Telkom's reasons for bandwith pricing).

So, if Telkom ensured that local peering was operative then the undersea fibre would not be impacted, thus saving Telkom money as well as providing a better Internet service for all local users.

But I guess I've gotten it all wrong.

I bet telkom really loves this advert, bet their takeup rate is smoking at the moment, thanks dotco for opening this can of worms, so it seems like ISPs can provide cheaper adsl with this new billing thing so our whole argument about telkom hardcapping is down the drain:mad:

Interdict and then decision on 5th december. Probably enough time for Telkom to grease some palms.
