I'm not even sure if this is the right thread, but I feel like venting.
Why can't Telkom import engineers from Cuba, Haiti, Afghanistan, Swaziland... to help them with ASSIA? It is bad enough that they claim that my area has VDSL on their fake maps, which it doesn't! We do, however have up to 20Mbps ADSL copper.
My line synced at 18200kbps for the first 3 days after I upgraded to 20Mbps. That was completely acceptable. My SNR margin was slightly above 6dB, but never dropped below 6.0. Contrary to everything that Telkom technicians have ever learnt, I also never lost sync. My router was connected 24/7 for three whole days in a row!
Anyway, ASSIA (I think) then decided to degrade my line sync to about 16000kbps. Great, my SNR margin went up slightly, but my connection was slower. The following day, my sync speed was degraded further to 14000kbps and my SNR margin went up even more.... Yay! The point is, I didn't have problems when my margin was 6dB. Zero, zilch, zip, nada! I don't do online gaming or stock trading and I don't control aircraft or sensitive medical equipment.
So, I asked Telkom, on Twitter, to please put me on "Fastpath" (or whatever). They kindly recreated my port and some other useless procedures. Nothing changed. The whole encounter ended in a "can you please send a speed test result", which is just code for "your speed is within an acceptable range, there is no problem". Useless.
I predict that my line will sync at 12000kbps tomorrow, because ASSIA seems to lower it by 2000kbps per day, until you downgrade to a lower package.
Less income, that's what makes Telkom truly happy!
* I emphasise margin because I suspect Telkom does not know the difference between SNR and SNR margin.
