Texting while driving, this has to stop

I don't even pick mine up to see who is calling if I'm driving. Never

Mine shows up the name and number on my dashboard and on my radio. I press a button on the radio (or indicator stalk) and it answers and goes handsfree.

This is a STOCK FEATURE in many upmarket cars, and I see people driving these cars with phones glued to their ears. WTF man? Are you too stupid to operate your damned car properly?
If you can afford a R200k car you can afford a R2k car kit, if it doesn't come standard.

Bloody darwin candidates.

And I am sure that all of you have 100% legit copies of all your software, movies, series's, etc in your house.. :)

And I am sure its extremely dangerous downloading illegal software, how many deaths a year are caused by it again?

Look, all these what ifs are valid. I get that. But the fact is it is probable she will lose her job, while there is only a small statistical chance that these dire events predicted will ever come to pass.
erm, only a small statistical chance?

Is she likely to be involved in a crash? In this country, that's a 'yes' for just about anyone given the craziness that is our traffic. Is it LIKELY that this behaviour has a high probability of causing a crash? Probably, those things happen WAY faster than you could think.

But is she likely to lose her job? Given that our labour laws make it a nigh impossibility to up and summarily fire someone, I highly doubt it.

And, frankly, I see FAR too much of this behaviour every ...EVERY day. And, given how much I (and by this I mean 'we', the road user) already have to watch out for, I'm not at all bok with THIS kind of zoned-out idiot making it worse.

I may have missed it, but you havent answered my question as to whether you considered the fact that she may lose her job before you sent the email?

Yet another thread that fails because of relativistic morals/legalities. MyBB certainly does have a high percentage of people that never exceed the speed limit, always park in allocated parking spaces, do a 5 point check every time they get in their cars, don't use pirated software, have never seen/heard any pirated music/series/movies and of course pay their tv license. I hope they are all getting tagged for e-tolls too.

I highly doubt this lady will lose her job, far more likely the managers will just laugh it off as some weirdo on the internet and tell her to avoid getting her photo taken by nerds while texting and driving.

Or she may get a stern warning, and decide not to do it again, and NOT drive into the back of you tomorrow. In that case, aren't you glad?

I can't believe people think that keeping a job is more important than obeying the law. wtf man.

Spunkywunky: the chances increase DRAMATICALLY - whether small initially or not, it's still an unnecessary and illegal increase.

If I stuck a gopro on my windscreen just on my daily drive and posted on here about every infraction mybb would have to open a new forum section (and I'd be spending a few hours per day going through 40mins of video).

Until they drive over your kid. Then you wouldn't be quite so sympathetic.
Didn't know I was being sympathetic, but ok.

I'd be sure to teach my kids to not play in the middle of a busy road though, and look 5 times in both directions before crossing it.

Imagine you could do this and report it to the metro. I'd do it.

As for equating endangering lives through negligent driving with pirating software - holy crap man you people are insane. How many people have DIED from having a movie copied? Is life less important than property rights?

No, I have a bluetooth system fitted. If you want to use your phone while driving then you should bare the expense of having a handsfree system fitted. Using a cellphone while driving has been proven to increase the risk of accidents, there's absolutely no way to justify this.

so you have always had such a system fitted while driving and owning a mobile?

Yes, you missed it. And tl;dr: losing a job with NO loss of life is a WHOLE lot better for everyone, her included, than the consequences of a crash. Specially when brought about by this kind of behaviour.

Perhaps, but I would really like the OP to answer my question himself :)

Actually, I'm not so sure. If this photo gets alot of exposure it will be very embarassing for the company - it's the kind of thing that can get a person fired. Large corporates don't have souls, they have public images......

Bringing the Company into disrepute.

I saw this post, but it seems you are saying you are ok with it after doing what you did. I am asking if you considered it before you emailed.

Yes, and during my student days my parents had one fitted for me. Of course back then it was a handsfree kit that you had to buy from you're cellphone manufacturer. Nowadays Bluetooth systems are standard on pretty much every car, and cheap to fit if they aren't. There's no excuse.

Really? Seeing as you are basing your actions on potential outcomes, did you consider she may have a family to support? That she may suffer from depression? That the economy sucks and she might struggle to find a job? That people have committed suicide after losing their jobs (yes, extreme I know, but you chaps are the ones bringing scenarios into play to justify actions :) )?

Stop defending her lawbreaking. She's trying to commit suicide right there and then in the photos.

Let me guess - you regularly do the same?

Look into community policing. It's effective the world over. This whole "the cops can't be bothered so why should I be?" is pathetic and helps nobody.

In SA people are texting and chatting away and driving drunk like it's nobody's business, because they reckon they probably won't get caught anyway.

In countries where the police do what they are there for, the risk of getting caught doing the above is way too high, so way fewer people actually do it.

The real issue is why the cops can't be bothered.
