Thailand Trip Report

After dinner we stopped off at the AirBnB, dumped our shopping and headed to Khao San Road. Man, what a trip this place is! After being confused and landing up in Rambuttri (adjacent to KSR) and mistaking it momentarily for KSR, once you actually get there it really is a lot of fun.. Party goers everywhere, insects on a stick, monks, bars, ladyboys, fire swinging people things, massages, street food, clothing.. It really is a lot to pile into one road but it really works well. We landed up here at the end of every night in Bangkok - even the evening we left (3AM flight), and there was always something fun to do.

To my chagrin I didn't take as many pics as I should have of KSR, I was probably just getting too drunk or just people watching.

I've been back since the end of Jan, but been slammed with work. So these reports are very delayed at the moment.

But I have a feeling I'll be back quite soon. Was looking at flight specials and really the only place I wanted to go was SEA.
 
Cool thread! Will go through it later in some more detail. Booked tickets for Thailand (Phuket) April/May. Haven't done any homework or booked any thing else but the tickets.
 
I always just stay on Khao San Road. Rikka Inn is perfect.

Otherwise Viengthai on Rambuttri is nice. It is now an Ibis hotel.

Why go sleep elsewhere in Bangkok?

That is my top tip in Thailand.
 
After hitting up KSR on Friday night, we had a leisurely morning at the AirBnB, before (unwisely) deciding to take a Tuk Tuk to Victoria Monument.

A word to the wise: Don't use Tuk Tuks in Bangkok. They're fun in smaller cities like Patong and Chiang Mai, but they don't really get you anywhere quicker than a normal car, it isn't that safe in that amount of traffic, and you will inhale an ungodly amount of vehicle emissions pretty much straight from the source.

Our mission near Victory Monument: Boat Noodle Alley for the famous Boat Noodles.

The concept of boat noodles, known in Thai as guay diow rua, is simple: bite-sized portions of either rice (sen lek) or yellow egg noodles (ba mee) with meat or tom yam soup are served up in equally tiny bowls. You can choose between beef, pork or fish balls and with of meat, which is all topped off with a few fresh herbs. Seasoning like dried chilli and fish sauce can be added for extra flavour. The curiously small size of each bowl really is the unique selling point of boat noodle alley. As a result, it’s common to see locals order dozens of bowls at a time (they cost about 15 baht each), which are then stacked high on the tables making for an all-important photo op before departure.

I had been keen to try these for a long while, and they lived up to the hype. These are basically miniature bowls of noodles with your preferred broth and meat added. Each cost 12B and if you're a pig like me you'll finish an embarrassing amount of bowls.

I liked being away from it to be honest, I think I can only do KSR in small amounts :o Although I might take your advice and stay closer next time.

From Victory Monument we took a taxi to ChinaTown in Bangkok - Yaowarat. It was during the taxi ride that we experienced our first real taste of traffic in Bangkok, sometimes taking 10 minutes to go a km.

The night markets that emerge after 6 in Yaowarat are famous for the insane way that seemingly thousands of street vendors pop up and set up right next to the road all of a sudden. We were a bit early so we headed to a hotel with a rooftop view over that part of town for a coffee and a smoke and a chill.

We were still quite early so we took a walk through some of Chinatown, it's quite amazing how some of the streets and alleys actually close up due to the stalls and just look like hallways of vendors. We stopped by a nearby temple and had a look around while the sun set.

Once we got back to Yoawarat Road the transformation had happened.

We walked around for a long while, before finally deciding on a little sidewalk restaurant with tables. We were seated next to an American couple from Texas, and had quite a long chat, in part due to the length of the wait for the food. No one really minded though, the place was really busy and the food looked and smelled really good.

We went with seared scallops and seared mussels with cheese which seem a common pairing here.

I also stopped at a little stall for some stewed pork and rice.

So so good.
 
That is the best part of traveling as a couple, you meet many people sharing tables.

After our fill of Yaowarat, we headed to Above Eleven - one of the 'trendy' hotel roof bars in Bangkok. The place is quite trendy, and I might be wrong but there seemed to be quite a few 'Instagram model' types as well as a lot of foreign escorts with johns. All beautifully dressed of course.

Prices of beer at the 7-11. Always nice to stop over at one on the way home.

I flew them to Thailand 3 years ago. Got totally plastered in Addis Ababa International during my layover, ended up spending almost the entire flight from there to Bangkok vomming my lungs out :crylaugh::sick:

Cheapest actually seems to be Qatar, comes in around R9800 for my JHB - USM, USM - BKK, BKK - USM multi city trip.

Sorry if this was asked but what method did you use to get your rand to baht? I'm going next week and don't want to get ripped a new one with exchange costs.
