Did you need to get transit visas?
Not if you don't leave the airport during the layover.
When I lived in SA I used Singapore Air. Flew via Singapore (Changi airport is the coolest in the world) and from there to Phuket.
The cool thing about Changi is all the stuff to do in there and not very crowded. Plus if your layover is longer than 8hrs or so, you get a guided bus tour of the city at no cost (Singapore is visa free for RSA). So you get to visit a country for free while on your way to Thailand. The airline itself was also really nice.

We used Qatar. Boeing 777 from here to Doha and a A380 to Bangkok. Both quite comfortable. Flights are VERY long >.<
Singapore Air is the best of the lot but also the most expensive. If you are planning going to Koh Samui then it is the best option.
You can fly Singapore Samui direct.
With other airlines just check your stop over length.

I'm doing flight pricing now for a planned trip later this year. I want to do JHB - Koh Samui, Koh Samui - BKK, BKK - JHB. Coming in around R10k on Ethiopian air. I've flown them before, I'm not scared to rough it a bit to save some bucks

Have you checked TravelStart? They've got air specials running til today.
Yeah I'm checking all the flight sites. I'm not ready to book yet so I'll hold thumbs for more specials later in the year.

I flew them to Thailand 3 years ago. Got totally plastered in Addis Ababa International during my layover, ended up spending almost the entire flight from there to Bangkok vomming my lungs out :crylaugh:
Cheapest actually seems to be Qatar, comes in around R9800 for my JHB - USM, USM - BKK, BKK - USM multi city trip.
They have a modern aircraft. From cape Town Boeing 777 dreamliner , to Bangkok A380. Use the same aircraft in reverse back
