Thailand Trip Report

Deal looks pretty good just double check the flights and hotels prices. Best way to compare is to check the prices on bookings.com and the the flights separately and add maybe R 1000 - R 1500 for transfers / ferries etc. (Make sure hotels have HVAC as it is pretty hot and humid)

Would definitely recommend Phuket, Phi-Phi and Krabi combo with a possible stop in Bangkok although I haven't been to Krabi or Bangkok but heard good things.
Bangkok is fokken awesome. I am addicted. I cannot wait to go back.

Bangkok is one of the best cities I have ever visited. Been going there since 2000 and have never skipped the city in any of my 13 or 14 trips to Thailand.

I usually stay on Khao San Road or close by. On our last trip in September we stayed at the Dewan Bangkok that is around the corner from Khao San.

We also went on a night tram tour to some temples and markets. It was great as one could go with no other tourists in sight. http://www.bangkoktram.com/

On our last trip I took a Motorbike taxi from Phantip Plaza in Pratunam to Khao San. One of the best trips I have done, it is the quickest way to get around if you are alone. ( My wife was tired and stayed at the hotel)

Hi guys
2022 bump... going next year Feb... any recommendations for a place to stay in Bangkok...

We currently doing 7 nights in Bangkok and 7 nights in Phuket with 2 nights on Phi Phi Island.

Any decent deals with data? 10gb should be fine as we just need it for whatsapp and basic google

Check Airbnb. You want to stay close to sukhumvit road, it’s the central main road and the BTS sky train runs parallel above it.

Most condominiums in Bangkok has a golf cart service from outside your accommodation for free and will take you to the closest Soi (exit) closest to the main road.

Forget about hotels.
Regarding data, once you get through Suvarnabhumi airport at customs and pickup your bag at the carousel, you have 3 vendors which you can choose from for data.

I usually pay 650 baht (approx R320) for 160gb of data that will last about 3 weeks.
All of the accommodation in Bangkok has lighting fast internet so you won’t be without connectivity.
There is ALOT to do in Bangkok, this is the 4th time this year I am here and I still have not yet visited all that Bangkok has to offer

Then, regarding Phuket, many choices. I recommend splitting your accommodation in 2. I would book for nights in a resort like high end place (and there are many) to choose from to really experience luxury and kick it back and take it all in. The other 3 nights I’ll spend in patong beach, which is more of your touristic hectic happening area.
There are also hundreds of places to choose from but don’t stay directly within central patong beach road. You won’t get any rest.

Let me know what else you might want to know

Apparently weed has just been made legal in Thailand, but smoking it in public is still illegal.

Yes the government also gave out 1M plants to citizens. If you wanted to grow it for medicinal purposes you just need to go register on the gov website. No need for approval or anything.
The only thing they are a little strict on is on extract (gummies or fudge or whatever) may not contain more than 0.2% THC

There are already coffee shops which sells by the gram but people here don’t smoke in public.

I normally book a few nights in Amari Watergate when flying in. Nice and central and close to loads of shopping venues.

Go with an AIS sim and buy a monthly topup. Your speed is limited, but you get unlimited data.

Hi all...

I am looking to book flights and strangely Travelstart is 30% cheaper than booking directly woth Qatar....

For local flights, I normally book directly with the airline but has anyone booked directly with travel start?

Any tips on getting cheap tickets to Phuket/Bangkok for Feb next year?

Thanks

I booked with Travelstart 2 months ago for an Istanbul trip. Was also cheaper than booking directly with the airline, about R2k. No problems at all.

Greetings from Phuket :)

Just wanted to do a blog/report from my travels in Thailand (first time visitors).

The trip will include parts of Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Accommodation will be a mix of hotel rooms, apartments and even a room in a hostel (Ao Nang). If you're planning a trip to any of those places and need some info, I'll try my best to help out.

My fiancee and I got in late last night, travelled via Dubai from Durban with Emirates. We're staying in a dodgy area of Patong, but with a very decent room for an obscenely cheap price. The room was booked via AirBnB, as were most of the places at which we will be staying.

After checking in, we took a taxi from our place to Bangla Road. The taxi cost 200baht and was in line with what the tuk tuks wanted, with no one really wanting to haggle. It was a bit frustrating because I knew it was only a km or so away but I didn't have a local SIM for Google Maps yet and since it was past 11pm I didn't want to have to go bumbling around looking for it. However that experience was offset because within the space of 5 minutes I saw a drop-dead gorgeous prozzie get off a motorbike with an older 'gentleman', a massive ladyboy with some awesome boobs, and a street fight..

Bangla Road was quite the experience :) I loved the **** out of it, and the fact that even though it was close to midnight on a Wednesday evening the place is absolutely packed. Of course, the numbers are quite inflated since it seems that for every tourist there are 3 people trying to direct you into their bar/restaurant/sex dungeon. We walked the roads for a while before finding a SIM package that I was OK with. We didn't get anything to drink except a couple of waters, but the booze prices didn't seem too bad at some of the kiosks we saw. We visited the beach and a few side roads as well, for the most part everywhere was busy.

With access to GPS we decided to walk back to our place. The walk would normally take around 15 minutes but by the time we stopped and checked out every place it was close to an hour and a half. Local time was around 2:30AM when we found a place at which we were happy to eat, quite close to our hotel. I opted for a shrimp/prawn soup and my fiancee had some pineapple fried rice. Mine was excellent, fresh and spicy. My fiancee also loved her food, I'm not a fan of the drier rice dishes, but the flavour was great.

It was the first time I tried Chang, and I enjoyed it, though it was a tiny bit on the sweet side.

It was still only around 11:30-ish SA time by the time we were done, but we were quite tired due to the travel so we headed back to the room, showered and passed out in the nice cool air conditioning.
Bali next. Same concept, better food.

My friend registered on Hotels.com

Then he books, without needing to pay a few places, till he gets his bearings straight where he wants to stay. He starts with 2-3 star hotels, then every week he checks and eyes the specials. When he finds one he likes he books the newer and cancels the current.

By the time he goes most are 4-5 star hotels at the places where he wants to go, but it takes a bit of planning and monitoring.

So if you have patience, thats the way to go.
