Odd to see a Nissan need a head gasket before 300k km. Those engines are usually pretty tough

Thanks being a brand new driver at the time when the radiator failed I drove it home and I got the bad news about the head gasket I've since learned a hard lesson

happened to my wife's honda jazz at 160k. so don't feel so bad. head gasket replaced cost R30k

Ouch. Yes, that is a harsh lesson to learn. Better luck with the Vivo (just don't tell Rouxenator)

Of late I've been obsessed with car longetivity. I would love to see how far I can take these two cars with regular and rigorous maintenence. I really don't want to fall into the trap of car repayments again.

That is a very good mindset to have. Reading this thread shows just how well a car can last if you give it the maintenance and care it deserves. Too many people fall into the 'must have the best and greatest' trap and upgrade their cars every two to three years just to have the best.

If you can afford to then by all means go for it, but I personally see no need to be switching cars around every few years if it's reliable and dependable. It's another story if you need a car for a different scenario (kids, bundu bashing, etc.) but buying new for the sake of buying new? Not for me, thanks

i am yet to buy a new car. trouble is some second hand cars come with hidden problems and are expensive to fix. usually because previous owners didn't maintain the cars.

I drive a 2005 Opel corsa lite. Paid for. Just had major service done via reeds . Still going strong. Have had three strangers complementing the engine...
how clean it looks and beautiful it is...

You paid R30k for a head gasket replacement, was that inclusive of a new cylinder head and all the work done at a Honda agent?

Probably correct Honda is quite pricey on service and repairs. My brother in law just did a service with for a Honda Jazz with the agent for R5000.00

That being said once serviced Honda is as pretty reliable as they come

We’ve had the same at the office with a company’s Pathfinder at 90k kms.

So a lot more than just a gasket replacement but still that's very pricey, I've seen similar prices for that kind of stuff from other brands the Frenchies especially come to mind.

Friend's car, fiesta 2011 1.4, 247000km, services the thing himself, still going.

2014 1.4TSI Jetta 6, currently on 205 000km bought it on 33 000km in 2015. Major fixes so far, clutch for R10k in 2016 at VW and again in 2017 for +/-R5000 at a private mechanic.

My 2005 Corsa Lite, still going strong.

Still going strong, engine untouched, the last major job done was the thermostat, water pump and timing belt at the beginning of the year.

2007 Polo 1.4 currently on about 218000km

I do my own servicing.
Major repairs:
new clutch 3 months ago - Approx R2000 with mechanic
Thermostat housing - around R600

My i30 is on 245'000km now. Mileage has been standing still since I got a company vehicle (which is on 238'000km now)
