The 2019 Weight Loss Thread - Workout Check-in Thread

So I came dangerously close to a work out yesterday.

Well that is, other people working out. I went to the Virgin active near my home to talk to the rep about joining.
It's the beginning once you start and don't train for one day your day won't be complete [PS you will feel it]

What application?

Fitbit. The screenshots are from the web dashboard for my account rather than the mobile app. I use a TomTom for my runs instead if the Fitbit as it has a built in GPS so don't have to take my phone runnning

Nice! DIY or do you go to an actual class?

I started a beginners class this week at the Colosseum in Bryanston. I've been interested in calisthenics for a year or two and have been doing my own thing from books and the internet which has worked really well for me from a strength and general fitness perspective.

I am lucky to have had access for the last 3 years to a really awesome coach and fitness community (think bootcamp type stuff) but I'm at a stage with the Calisthenics where some focus and more specialised input is going to help me level up.

So far the lessons have been similar to what I have been doing DIY but there have been some good twists and variations and the workouts have been challenging so I'm very happy so far.

Calisthenics is mainly about progression and although I doubt I will be performing planches or human flags at the end of this course I'm really excited to have taken this step.

Don't feel that you necessarily have to join a gym to begin exercising. Park Run (or walk,) going out and running walking or hiking or carrying out bodyweight excercises are all free and don't require expensive equipment.

Making a choice to begin exercising doesn't need to cost money or commit you to signing up for a gym membership that you may or may not use. If you do want to spend money, rather signup for a good class like a bootcamp, kickboxing or whatever floats your boat for a few weeks. Free bootcamps are offered in some areas from time to time.

There's nothing wrong with joining a gym if it offers you value but many people perceive this as the only option when they want to exercise and take this route by default.

You can make the choice to begin your fitness journey at little or no cost and defer the expenditure of the gym membership, fancy home gym equipment or the Gucci pair of trail running shoes until you can have confidence that it won't be money down the drain.

Of course, it is important to begin exercise somehow. You can find a reason to not do anything so whatever route you decide suits you, please ignore the doubts and objections and just start :-)

Cool.. I've gotten a bit bored with my standard gym stuff and have been looking at taking this up. What apps/sites did you use to start off with?

I've been quite bad at doing anything active this year so far, now checking in with a buddy every day since Monday to be accountable :P Aiming for 10,000 steps minimum a day, and 5 minute workout on kettlebell's in the evening's. I'm damn unfit, so 5 minutes on kettlebell's is quite the task for me..... Aiming to increase to 10 minutes by March.

Great. Starting small is good and will help with progressing over the long run.

Think you'll be surprised at how quick you will actually get to that 10min. Human body has a wonderful way of adapting quickly to changes.

My wife recently started asking me for advice as well on some exercise and she started doing some HIIT sprints with me 2 times a week. This is her second week and tonight will be her 4th session. She did 5 x for the first two sessions and on Monday she decided by herself after 5 x that she has the energy and wants to squeeze out another 2 x.
She already mentioned this morning that she will not stop until she hits 8 x tonight. Granted she only does 50m where I do about 80m sprints. But once she hits 10 x she will have to adjust her distance for a bigger challenge.

I never ran in my life 4 years ago, I did a couch to 5km plan and then within 2 months was KLAPPING 40km-60km a week (a bit much and wouldn't recommend to all but just mentioning what I did). When you realise that your body is indeed a machine that you are in control of (mind of matter) its a beautiful thing. Your body adapts its not like a car when you need to add something to make it faster. Train a little harder and your body will adapt!

I started with a 47minute 5km and 6 months later 22minute 5km boom! will never ever forget that run!

Dragged myself to gym. My ankle was giving issues so couldn't do the supercircuit so went to the assault fitness bike instead. Was good. Almost felt easy after the supercircuits of the past few weeks.
