I have the link, but your questions are easy to answer.
The engine is a dud. Alot of people minus Fazda seem to agree.
Digital feel is not vague, it means computer assisted, not "real"

I guess the article pits the 86 against the Cayman as other journos wrote about, the 86 is not nearly as good as the Cayman.

Let's just say that 99.9% of the world think that the engine is great and Haldex and his mate who wrote this rather pathetic article think it's a dud.

The car was never meant to be pitted against the Cayman, so why the hell that has slipped in, I don't know.

Getting back to the engine being a dud - if it's because it "only" produces 147 kw and 204 nm, may I respectfully ask you to do some homework on engines before you spout any more crap.


BTW Haldex, what is it with you that you find it necessary to troll a thread with utter rubbish - this is not the first time.
 
The Cayman cost DOUBLE what the GT86 is, so I don't know who would make that comparison. Fazda the funny thing is you are trying to convince him with logic, but he's an obvious troll. Just ignore.

Its an average engine.
Not great. Would have been great 5 years ago but not now...
147kw Naturally Aspirated is a hatchback engine, its old tech, was decent for the Honda Type R new and old and the Toyota Runx Rsi which was 141kw I think.
Very silly to drop this engine into a "sportscar" in a horizontally opposed manner for "balance" and btw 205nm is a joke, no really its laughable.

Id like to be the Toyota 86 hater:D

Those are all front wheel drive cars. And if you want to argue that front wheel drive is more driver oriented, or gives a better driving experience, or even want to compare the two dynamically, then ill send you the number to this local insane asylum near a squatter camp, im sure they can help you.

Lets not forget, the GTI doesn't have a limited slip diff either. You cant have FUN with it. It might be a little bit faster, but that's not the point. If all you want is straight line speed, get a GTI. If you have the talent, and want to kick the arse out on a bend, this toyota is probably the best thing to do it in. Now that's fun. Personally, IMO this gt86 is in another league when it comes to the driving experience, and any one can argue the counter till they are blue in the face, fact is, you are wrong :) Give it a drive, you will fall in love with the chassis.. I promise you that.

as for price, value, similair priced cars, comparisons etc... all subjective and will always bear strong emotion etc..

i just see it for what it is, and its a paradigm shift for TSA...

If the 86 had a turbo, better interior etc. etc. it would be R500k+ and then it wouldn't be the sportscar bargain that it is.

If people don't like it, then they won't buy it. But trying to tell other people that they are wrong for liking something is a bit arrogant.

PS: I'm not that interested in an 86, but I can still see why it exists, why it is important and why it is something worth considering.
 
I think there's a wee bit of merit in what Haldex has been posting, only insofar as I also think the car has been over-hyped. None the less, for the money it'll probably be the best and most involving drive you'll get, and there's certainly something to be said for that. If that's all you're looking for, there won't be a better buy on the market.

I do however think that the engine's going to feel a little overburdened at Highveld altitude. Should be a hoot at the coast...

You need acceleration to speed into bends and then out, if you slow into the bend and then slow out of the bend, any car will be "balanced" right?

So what is this driving experience that we've never had before?

I guess you this car is not for you, not because of its engine, not because of anything the car has or doesn't have. Its because you don't understand how to drive like a hooligan and have fun. I take it your a lexus person. You sure come across like that :) (aka boring)

I dont drive like a hooligan or have any ambitions to drive like one.

Im sure one can have more Hooligan fun in a 1M or 135... but you might say it very expensive and motorplan and and and.

Ill just leave it that those in favour of the Toy86 are into cheap thrills, like cat, tik, sugars and cough mixture....

The fact that you comparing the 86 to porsche caymans BMW 1Ms ect already means that the car is a success, becuase YOU, a person trying to justify the reasons of hating the vehicle cannot find a well priced eqivalent. In order words you are comparing it with cars double the price, while we at why dont we all buy aston martins and mclarens hmmmm? im sure they are better than the 86 too. No wait lets drag with F-18s ? now im sounding silly isnt? well thats exactly how you sound you just unaware of it. Besides those cars are built for speed not fun, try having fun in an 1M in SA and you going to hit a pothole and DIE. If you survive you going to get arrested lol because those cars will only get entertaining at a very high speed.

The engine is not a dud, if you heard it you would know. Yes it requires to be pushed up in high revs HOWEVER, thats not because the engine is a dud its because of the exhaust. The car has 2 catalytic converters to process the emissions, hence why there isnt any co2 tax (well techinically its included in the price). If you were to take it to an exhaust shop and install 2 free flow exhausts you would boost this car's power by almost 30 kW. Also keep in mind that the car is designed to be green and sporty at the same time.

If you seriously think the engine is a dud and uses old technology I suggest you go read up. The engine revs up 8000rpm (give or take), its a 2 litre and has 4 cyclinders. It pushes out almost the same power as VW's 2.0.l TURBO CHARGED engine which red lines at about 6000rpm. Now if you remove toyota's environmental fittings and do the software mod this car's power will exceed a GTI. Furthermore the car is light so it has a very high kW/weight ratio and in terms of going fast, thats the most important aspect. Sure a GTI will probably smash this 86 in a drag race if both are factory standard, but in real racing terms (even drag) the GTI would stand no chance. Once you turbo charge the 86 (so it would be in the same class as the turbo charged VW) the 86 will smash that VW hands down. If you did some small mods you can bump the 86's power to about 230kW in a car thats less that 1.2 tons. Oh plus you will look so much cooler in a 86 than a GTI :P.

GTI = another idiot performing in a bread loaf looking car
86 = Wanted to perform like a GTI idiot, but used his brains to look cooler in a proper 2 door sports coupe that was cheaper.

So before you class the engineering of this vehicle use your brains first :P

I simply love the concept of the 86, this way people like me who can afford a porsche dont have to bust my head over running costs and can still be epic :D also toyota is far easier to play with modding than a porsche after warranty and motor plan and all that rubbish. I bet if this car had a BMW badge it would be sold out before it even came to SA ... and would have a 700k tag on it
