The Antenna Waiting Area

Okay, so I get bored very easily [:0]... had to leave the waiting area yet again to look for antennas... here's what I found:

Well I have phoned fastcomm twice, but have not been able to get hold of someone technical to find out more about the antenna. I sent a mail to [email protected] (there's a link from their website), but have had no reply either.

Does anyone know what the specs are of the antenna they are selling? All I got out of the first person I spoke to is 'there is a 1.5 meter one and a 2.5 meter one'. I presume she was referring to the length of the cable, not the antenna (it's a patch antenna is it not?)

What connector does it have? Do they have the pigtail too?

Sigh, so many questions..
 
Just got of the Phone with Fastcomm they said the antenna will be availble either tomorrow or thursday

I have gone the home-brew route, and ordered an MCX -> N male connector, and an N-female chassis mount connector from poynting.co.za. Placed the order on Monday, and the pigtail will be ready on Thursday.

Then - it's cantenna experimentation time !

From a guesttimate size comparison of the Fastcomm patch antennae versus the specs of the one poynting carries, I'd guess the antenna they offer does around about 9db.

A proper cantenna, on the other hand, has been tested to give between 10-15db gain on WiFi kit.

So, I'm going to give it the old-fashion home-kit-dyi-test myself, before possibly investing in one of these cute suction cup attached items. I'll be messing about with just a plain can waveguide first ( http://www.saunalahti.fi/~elepal/antenna2.html), combined possibly with an old dish, and then with a directional yagi, as described here: http://seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/DirectionalYagi

i just stuck a pringles thingy on like that other dude did and my signal went from -92 dbi to -77 dbi

about 28% at the best, however, if they activate tower 12, I get 32% without an antenna [:p]
 
I stuck a Pringles tube on my antenna like that other dude too, and after much moving around, I couldn't get anything close to the signal I was getting with no Pringles tube - so, I haven't done it again

What flavour did you use? [:p]

I used 10 year old Clifton flavour. Which is a bigger and shorter tin. Got 4 db extra. A smaller tin just killed the signal.

As for noone's claim : It does not seem possible for Pringles can with its small opening to catch 30 times (15db) the energy. Unless you had very small little aerial to begin with.

Remember, some towers are numbered the same

as for pmik, with the pringles "cantenna" it is pretty much directional, which I like, because I am covered by 4 towers, and prefer to connect to 66, now I can connect to 66 without any trouble, just point and shoot

also, if you made the whole too much infront of the can, you won't get much signal, it basically works the same as a satelite dish, it has a focal point where it needs to be at

it's a 120mm from the base inside the can, plus, you can make a metal funnel type thing to stick onto the entrance of the pringles can to "catch" more signal

Noone has basically made a horn antenna with a circular waveguide. The pringles can is the waveguide section and the funnel is the flare section making the transition from the waveguide to free space.

The distance where you put the hole is very important. It basically needs to be a quarter waveguide wavelength from the base of the can (or the focal point as Noone likes to call it). If it is half a waveguide wavelength away, you will get little or no signal. (Noone your hole might be too far from the base). Might be worth trying to move it inwards a centimeter or 2. You could close the old hole with some aluminum sticky tape.

The minimum diameter of your can (for 2.5 GHz) must be 7 cm, 8 cm should be ideal. Don't have a Pringles can with me, my guess is they are about 7 to 8 cm in diameter.

For optimum gain, the flare angle should be in the region of 30 degrees (0 degrees flare would mean you are just making your can longer). At the end of the flare the diameter should be around 20 to 30 cm.

Based on the link I improved my cantenna (10cm diameter) to 6 dB i.e. 4 times as much enegy as without it.

You can send me screen shots and 10Mpixel photos, I still won't believe that every one of those 15dBs (i.e. 30 times the energy) are due to your can.

(Remember that the majority of energy coming into the opening of the can goes back out through that very same opening).

Actually, on that site TheRodent had, there was a calculator where you gave the dimensions of the pringles can, the wavelenght which you are picking up, and it works it all out for you. What could be a bit out is the lenght I pushed the existing antenna of the modem into the pringles can. It should be 120mm from base, and 120mm into the pringles can

The pringles can is 8 cm in diameter, and 23cm in lenght, I'm not using the circular waveguide idea yet, i'm too lazy

NRoets, okay without the cantenna stuck up on the modem (check out ProAsm's site, he has pictures of a user doing it) I have between -95dbm and -91dbm (even -89dbm) or i think it's dbm? (what gives me the idea we're talking about two different things here?)

Anyway, WITH the antenna thingy I made out of pringles (yummy) I get -77dbm and my modem does not need to stand on the window thingy (you know the place, i'm too tired to think) and stands next to my puter, where, without the antenna thingy, I only get 8%-15% signal

With 28%
Without 15%

My milkshake brings the boys to the yard...

noone, have you tried commenting out the frequencies of the towers you dislike ? I don't know where one would do such a fing. Have been looking at /xp/Program\ Files/IPWireless\ Inc/IPWireless\ PC\ Software/Operator/Operator.ini, but maybe those settings are copied into the registry during installation.
