Please hep me understand how the Pi fits into everything. Does it pretty much act as the mainboard, like you would have on an Antminer?

Do you HAVE to use it? I see there are Pi images for download on their site, guessing it's pretty straight forward. Guess I can't just plug it into my router and http to it from whatever endpoint?

The problem is they want you to go onto skype and order, and there are many fake profiles that look almost exactly the same, I have also emailed to find out when the next batch and what the price would be, I believe they don't respond to emails much.
