The Audi A6 Thread

Audi S6 Sedan TDI

Sportiness meets efficiency - the new Audi S6 and S7 models make their entrance with a torquey V6 TDI engine, offering customers in Europe the ideal performance models for the long haul. For the first time, Audi has combined an electric powered compressor with a 48-volt primary electrical system. The S sport suspension with damping control, dynamic all-wheel steering and the ceramic brake system tick all the boxes for dynamic cornering and deceleration. The striking design with the sophisticated looks of an S model lends these sporty full-size models particular presence.

"Torque kick": electric powered compressor and 700 Nm of torque

The huge torque peaking at 700 newton-meters (516.3 lb-ft) constantly available on demand to the driver across an engine speed range of 2,500 to 3,100 rpm is the ideal basis for performance-minded customers in Europe. The S TDI models offer high driving dynamics and efficiency - an especially attractive combination for long-distance driving. With the S6 and S7 TDI models Audi systematically takes the successful drive concept of the SQ7 TDI to the next level. For the first time, Audi's engineers have paired an electric powered compressor with a 48-volt primary electrical system.

This takes the three-liter V6 TDI's total power output to 257 kW (349 hp). Power transmission is handled by the eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, which always operates in tandem with quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

New Audi S6, S7 to be offered in TFSI (not TDI) form in SA

When the new Audi S6 Sedan and S7 Sportback were recently revealed, the big news was the fact this pair of performance models would be offered with 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engines in Europe. Audi South Africa, however, has now confirmed the local market will instead receive TFSI units.

This will see South Africa align with markets in the United States, Asia and the Middle East, where the S6 and S7 will be fitted with a version of Ingolstadt’s familiar 2,9-litre V6 petrol mill.

Audi SA also confirmed to CARmag.co.za the S6 Avant is not destined to be offered locally.

Expect the twin-turbo six-cylinder to offer some 331 kW and 600 N.m in the SA-spec versions of the S6 and S7, just like it does in the RS4 Avant and RS5 family. However, since these new models are larger and heavier, they obviously won’t be quite as quick as their smaller, full-fat RS-badged siblings (although performance figures have yet to be revealed).

Beautiful looking sedan.
Not a fan of estates though

Audi S6 2019 review

Should I buy one?

Whether you should go for the S6 is the million-pound question. For many, the engine sound and behaviour will do much to sell it. You simply don’t imagine that something badged TDI could behave like this. But it is a diesel, and a £60,000-plus diesel at that. Whether a user-chooser will be allowed to take the perceived risk of purchase by his or her employer is a moot point.

Other cars in this bracket offer a bit more chassis adjustability, but precious few are as well made, go as fast or as far on a gallon or sound as great. Tough choice.

New Audi A6 Allroad marks 20 years of rugged models

Audi’s rival to the Volvo V90 Cross Country is available to order from August priced from £55,000

Audi has released the first images and details of its fourth-generation A6 Allroad ahead of it going on sale in August.

Dubbed the A6 Allroad quattro, it arrives as Audi celebrates two decades since the first Allroad model was launched. Like its predecessors, it’s based on the standard A6 Avant but adds rugged styling details, a raised ride height and standard all-wheel drive.

The A6 Allroad’s body sits 45mm higher than the A6 Avant's, with standard adaptive air suspension tuned specifically for the off-road-focused model. It adjusts the ride height significantly depending on the car’s speed and driving mode, lowering it at speeds above 74mph for better aerodynamic efficiency.

Further terrain-covering standard kit includes hill descent control and new tilt angle assistance, which shows the car’s angle when negotiating terrain and warns when there is a risk of it tipping over.

Audi S6 Avant TDI 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

Modern Audis tend to be Marmite for car lovers. Spend a decent amount of time in one of its executive saloons or wagons, and generally they are hard to fault In terms of technical competence and comfort. The problem, if you like driving, is that old icy lack of engagement. It’s so common it’s become something of a cliche.

But the S6 goes a fair way towards addressing that stereotype, without losing its premium-class poise and stepping into more obviously brutal RS territory. The car treads a fine line well.

If you travel regularly over significant distances, but want a surplus of bang for your 60,000 bucks, the S6 could be your answer.

Audi A6 55 TFSIe quattro plug-in hybrid arrives with 362bhp

Four-wheel-drive petrol-electric saloon offers more than 30 miles of electric driving at speeds of up to 84mph

The new Audi A6 plug-in hybrid has gone on sale in Germany as Audi progresses with the electrification of its line-up.

The A6 55 TFSIe quattro, first revealed at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, takes its power from a 249bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, with a 141bhp electric motor integrated into the gearbox for a combined output of 362bhp. This powertrain also features in plug-in hybrid versions of the Q5 and A7 Sportback.

Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with maximum torque output rated at 369lb ft. The saloon will accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.6sec and on to a top speed of 155mph.

A less powerful variant, the 50 TFSIe, is set to arrive later, offering 295bhp and 332lb ft.

New Audi A6 (and S6!) sedan in South Africa: local prices announced

Audi South Africa has released local pricing for its latest A6 sedan (nearly two years after its global reveal), while also revealing the starting price of the 331 kW S6 saloon.

According to the Ingolstadt-based firm’s local website, the A6 will be offered in 40 TDI guise, priced from R885 000 (we suspect a 40 TFSI derivative is also on the cards, though pricing has not yet been released). This variant’s 2,0-litre turbodiesel engine offers 140 kW and 400 N.m, which Audi claims is enough for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 8,4 seconds (and a 237 km/h top speed).

The A6 40 TDI will ship standard on 18-inch alloys, although items measuring up to 21 inches in diameter will be optionally available. Other interesting options for this model include a panoramic glass sunroof (R21 000), a night vision assistant (R37 800) and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system (R15 200).

And the S6 sedan? Well, the performance variant will start at R1 349 500, with its twin-turbo 2,9-litre V6 petrol engine (rather than the oil-burning V6 offered in Europe) delivering 331 kW and 600 N.m to all four corners. The result, claims Audi, is a blast from zero to three figures in 4,5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Audi A6 (2020) Price in South Africa

Audi South Africa has updated its website and loaded up pricing and some details of its A6 executive sedan. Here's how much it will cost, as well as details regarding the S6.

Taking the fight to the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the new Audi A6. It should be touching down in SA imminently and the configurator is active for both the A6 and S6.

The Audi A6 and S6 are available with just the single-engine option each. The A6 40 TDI S tronic features a 2.0-litre TDI which produces 140 kW and 400 Nm. Audi is claiming a sprint time of 8.4 seconds and it'll run to a top speed of 237 kph. The more performance-focused Audi S6 makes do with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine with 331 kW and 600 Nm, which petrolheads will recognise as the same outputs as the RS4/RS5. Audi Sport claims 4.5 seconds to 100 kph, with a limited top speed of 250 kph. If you're wanting even more, well you're going to have to wait for the thundering Audi RS6 Avant which is due in 2020.
