so, a mate of mine went to go test drive the new Audi Q2 last week.

Everything seems to be going well until he realizes that this specific 1.4 model is going for a crisp R620 000

A quick Autotrader search revealed that there are 1.4 models going for up to R650 000. Honestly, who would pay that type of money for a small car that looks like a Polo Cross from behind?

Indeed bonkers.

In the Q2 Thread I popped a link to an 1.4 example going for R661k & that still didn't include Virtual Cockpit!

Hectic hey!

Dont understand tho, are people paying this premium because its a "rare" car on the road?

One can get a 2017 Q5, 2.0TDI with only 100km on the clock for R659k, why would anyone then buy a 1.4 Q2 for R661k?

Besides it being completely bonkers paying that amount of money for a car - somebody has to do it so that in 2-3 years time someone else can buy that vehicle 2nd-hand for 50% less :p

I am curious though how a person arrives at that conclusion - i.e. pay R500k+ for an okay-ish new car when you can find a much better 2nd-hand car for probably less! Perhaps it is the novelty of having a brand spanking new car and knowing that no-one else has driven it before?

I have to admit, Audi is becoming ridiculous with their new vehicle prices.

Well sure, and someone would argue for the price you're paying for that Q5 you could get a great condition Q7. And so on and so forth.
Q2 is on a new platform, new design. Some people prefer smaller cars, maybe prefer how it looks.

Correct. My thinking as well.

Crazy money.

I am happy for those that can afford it. Personally I cannot justify paying R600k for a car. Not being able to afford it also helps.

My very middle class in-laws firmly believe that every second hand car has been in a massive accident and is covered in herpes and as such only ever buy brand new cars.

So there is this S5 going for R210k at the new VW dealership across the road. I have no idea on the mileage or age but could that be a worthwhile purchase ?

I really don't think Ill get it even though its in my price range and I absolutely adore the car.... I'm thinking that the service plan has expired and the maintenance and upkeep is just going to kill me ?
I just have to do a test drive, I need to get it out of my system. I suppose if I was paying cash it might be worth it....

Go and check it out. Considering the price the owner probably got rid of it, because the maintenance plan ran out.

It probably has the 4.2 V8 engine, which will be thirsty. At least you don't have to worry about turbo's blowing :p

Just had to replace my clutch and flywheel on my A4. The difference between Audi's quote and what I ended up actually getting the replacement done for was stupefying.

Audi quote for parts and labour was R37 000. I sourced the same parts through GoldWagen and a friend that works at Midas for R11 000 and that included stuff for a minor service. Labour cost R4900. Sorted! Tires and brakes next :(

Yip... its the V8.

Reason for getting rid of my current car is because I'm hating the 8.6l/100km it gets at the moment.

LOL.

Then try 450km for 82l on the 4.2 V8 if you are doing any kind of traffic.

10l/100km if you only hit the freeway though as it hardly idles at 120km/h.

Maintenance and so on isn't that outrageous as long as you don't use the dealership. Certain things are obviously more expensive since you need double the spark plugs and have performance braking system etc.

But general maintenance is much of a muchness.

That kind of consumption means I'll probable never be able to afford those kind of cars, as lovely as they are. I get annoyed when I average 8L/100km sitting in 90% stop/go traffic. Driving normally including some open road I can get between 5.5 and 7. I'll probably cry if I empty 85L in 400 odd km's.

So, one day before the car is a month old, I go shop and park next to a white double cab (probably Hilux but not sure), and get my first dent (no paint off and very small dent fortunately).

Should I go the Dent Doctor way or do you somebody better in JHB ?

Should I declare it to the insurance (will I lose my no claim bonus if I do ?) ?

Never used a dent doctor but definitely be cheaper and less hassle than insurance, I have heard if the guy is skilled they can do magic and make some dents disappear.

It will anyway be under my excess but I was wondering if the insurance should be warned or made aware of the repair ?

The repair will obviously be done by an Audi approved body repairer.

Can't touch your no claims bonus if you don't claim.

But letting them know won't hurt.

At the same time not letting them know won't hurt either.

Now if it was a third party involved that could potentially claim against you at a later date then it would have been reason to let them know.

Well, i doubt the Hilux who banged his door into mine while I was shopping will claim.

Unfortunately, there's no CCTV in that parking so I can't get his registration.

I'll just go for the easiest and get a quote tomorrow, thanks !

You might want to consider scratch and dent cover.

I pay R75 a month for R3000 cover, it cost R300 to claim and you can claim unlimited times a years. Had my side mirror scratched twice, and they paid out both times.

My policy is with Iwyze.
