Took the A4 (B8.5) for a drive from Cape Town to PE today. Car was immense. Strong. Pulled well, especially surprised uphill. Consumption was awesome, completed the trip on one tank and still have some fuel left in PE. Feels like the car really needed the drive too..it just got better and better. Did the entire trip in normal 'ecoish' mode though... Will definitely change some of it to sport on the way back...

First electric Audi Sport cars likely to be SUVs

Audi's performance division aiming to launch battery machines by 2025

Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann says the division’s first electrified cars, due to arrive by 2025, are likely to be SUVs or limos for packaging reasons.

Winkelmann said that Audi’s performance arm, which was rebranded from Quattro Sport late last year, will grow its range from 10 to 16 models by 2020, before progressing to developing battery machines.

“Between 2020 and 2025 we have to start electrification,” said Winkelmann, the former boss of Lamborghini. “The first step for me is not in the shape of an R8, but it might be an SUV or a limo, where we have in terms of packaging, room and power-to-weight ratio a higher degree of forgiveness.

“When we speak about electric cars, if you ask me if I want to have them all [powertrain types], I’ll say ‘yes, I want plug-in hybrids, hybrids, whatever is available’. But if I have to pick one, and hit the target immediately and do a lot of things with one shot, my first choice would be a battery electric vehicle.”

Speaking at the launch of the Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Winkelmann added that it was unlikely that an electrified version of the R8 would be produced – but said such technology would likely appear on its eventual successor.

“We now have one car which is ours [Audi Sport’s], which is the R8. If nothing is changing, we have the opportunity for the Audi R8 to do the next single shot. But if I have to be honest, with the view and knowledge I have today, it’s going to be the follow-up to the R8.”

Winkelmann said Audi Sport would draw on electrification technology being developed by Audi and elsewhere in the VW Group, saying: “If it maintains the DNA of what Audi Sport should be today or for the day after tomorrow, then we have to pick whatever it takes from all the shelf platforms that are available in the group.”

The rebranding of Audi Sport last year has drawn comparisons with Mercedes performance arm AMG, but Winkelmann said the firm had a different proposition, and would not necessarily chase AMG’s volume. Audi Sport will launch two new models at this year’s Frankfurt motor show, and Winkelmann said the focus for future cars was on developing global models.

“We’ll concentrate more and more on those cars which are sellable around the world, and which have an equal distribution worldwide,” said Winkelmann. “If we invest in a local car, say for the European market, we may sell a third as many as if you put it in the right [global] segment.

“But we will not forget our icons. One of them is the R8, and we will continue to build such models.”

Have a look in the cubby (if that's where they put it in the A1) - the port should be the same as that in the A4 I guess. Then you just need to check what you want to put on the other end of it and buy the appropriate cable..

I'm almost certain I don't have the port at all... I'll have a look when I get my car back from the gearbox place. Thanks

You can probably order the cable from eBay for a fraction of the dealer price.

Audi to launch On Demand car service in UK later this year

Customers can arrange to hire any car from Audi's range for a period of time through an app; In the US, an Audi A3 is available from $130 a day (£100)

Audi will launch its On Demand car service in the UK later this year.

The service allows customers to hire any car in the Audi range for a period of time ranging from days to weeks. Global trials began in 2016 in San Francisco, with the UK initiative set to kick-off from the firm’s new dealership in Oldham this autumn.

The scheme works by allowing customers to reserve a car via an app, and then have it collected and delivered to their own home, or from a dealership. Customers are given a tour of the car and have all its functions explained as part of the service, as Audi believes this will also help them see the benefits they offer, and potentially persuade them to take out more vehicle loans or buy a car.

Audi hopes that the scheme can help it take early steps in understanding how to develop future car ownership models, under which customers may not wish to own a car outright. As such Audi On Demand is feeding into the firm’s future mobility strategy, which includes advancing electrification, connectivity and autonomous technology.

“We see it as a trial from which we can learn,” said Audi UK’s managing director Andrew Doyle. “It’s going to be fascinating both from a consumer point of view and from our point of view, as we find out how people use different cars at different times.

“We’ll get a few things wrong, but we have expertise as a group having launched On Demand in some countries already . We are not rental car experts but we’ll give it a try. The indications are that such a scheme can work, but we’ll start small and test the appetite.”

In the US, an Audi A3 is available from $130 a day (£100), while an R8 costs $1200 a day (£1030).

Doyle acknowledged that there is a risk that customers will typically want a small vehicle during the working week, and either a family-friendly car, open-top car or sports car at weekends, but said: “That’s what we’re looking to learn. And if that is the case, then we will learn lessons in how to manage the fleet of cars that we have available.”
