Yeah and based on the format, the best teams in Africa don't always qualify unlike the other continents. Its a big reason it took so long for Africa to have a team in the semis. Egypt used to dominate Afcon but never qualified for the World Cup for a long time.

Not taking away from what Barker achieved but he was more of a good mentor than tactician. At the time, they wanted a more tactical coach to take the team to France 98 after they didn't do so well in that Confederations Cup. I think they should have given him the World Cup after what he did but its justifiable as well why they wanted another coach.

Barker's lack of tactical insight was also a reason the bigger PSL teams stayed clear of hiring him. Good guy and good mentor but in terms of tactics, maybe not the best.

The CAF process was one of the simplest. 9 groups of 6, winners qualify, 4 best runners-up enter a knockout round where the winners go to an intercontinental playoff. Eritrea withdrawing and CAF not being able to adequately manage and communicate that is their own doing.

For comparison, with Russia's suspension, UEFA has the same number of nations as CAF (54) and they (UEFA) have the added layer of incorporating the outcome of the Nations League into the second round of their qualification process, where they have to then seed 16 teams into 4 different ''paths''.

The AFC (47 members) and CONCACAF (41 members) have layered qualification processes, including preliminary playoffs where weaker nations are pitted against one another. The AFC qualification process is the most intense of the lot, as it has 5 rounds, 3 of which are group stages, and the team that wins in the 5th round still has to go to an intercontinental playoff. If Iraq or the United Arab Emirates (they will meet in the AFC 5th round playoff) qualify for the World Cup (or even reach one of the two intercontinental playoff finals), they would have played 22 matches, more than any other country throughout the entire qualification process, going through 4 continental rounds and an intercontinental playoff.

*I ignored the OFC because they only have 11 nations, and even then, they had 3 rounds (including preliminary knockouts to eliminate the weakest teams) to determine who would go to the intercontinental playoff.

CAF needs to sort itself out if the rest of the continents can manage far more complicated processes.

I prefer CAF's process of qualification to other organisations....

Anyways, I think Nigeria has a strong chance to win the play-offs if they can repeat their performance against Benin.

We have to use this as our stepping stone to solidify a good team. Nigeria will always be a threat and cape Verde over recent CAF tournaments is an underdog that a great number of Euro teams will over look in WC
