The Bafana Bafana Thread

According to today's Sowetan "he flatly refused to shake hands with Danny Jordan and Dennis Mumble when they came to congratulate him on the victory accusing them of not giving him their support and he continued his rant even when the television crew were about to interview him and the interview had to be delayed by a couple of minutes for him to calm down.

According to an SABC employee he was not in a state to go on air as he was pointing fingers at the media and SAFA in particular accusing them of wanting him out so that their friends can be given the Bafana job.

Throwing a tantrum like that if you have not even qualified and having won by a gift from the referee was not a clever move.

So he wins one crucial game and now he has vindicated himself and wants to blast all the critics - why is he now going to qualify for the WC and African nations and so on?!

Or am I reading this wrong?

We very far from qualifying as we still have to travel to Senegal for a return match and you can just imagine how hostile the situation will be for us in Senegal if we needed a gift from the ref to win here at home.

Shakes is really being a baby...

Shakes is really being a baby...

Exactly - he is being very premature in his attitude as the right man with just one big win. Still along way from proving himself to be the guy who takes Bafana to the World Cup and actually does well there. He should be more humble and take the criticism and they way to prove them wrong is with consistent results and not blowing up one win

Shakes ready to tackle Safa in court

A fierce battle between axed Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba and the SA Football Association (Safa) is on the cards. Mashaba's legal representatives say Safa should not appoint a new coach while they take the matter of his dismissal to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Mashaba was sacked as national team coach last month after a disciplinary committee found him guilty of gross misconduct, insubordination and violating the communications policy of Safa. This is after the coach's public outburst in November in Polokwane where he had a go at Safa bosses and the media following his side's 2-1 victory over Senegal.

Mashaba, according to his legal representative Claudio Bollo, wants to be reinstated as national team coach, but the fiery coach will be seeking compensation should he not return to the hot seat. Mashaba's contract was due to expire after the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia. "We've asked Safa in writing not to appoint a new coach. If they do not agree to this, then we will seek the court's help in an interdict.

"We will probably be signing the papers this week [to take to the CCMA], but we are talking about that with the coach.

"The coach, like anybody, would like to continue coaching the national team. That's his first prize. If it does not happen, you have a damages claim.

"He would claim the remainder of his contract because his contract runs until the 2018 World Cup."

Mashaba earned around R500 000 per month. Bollo feels they have a strong case and hopes it will be resolved by March.

"We think the coach's case is strong. We feel he should not have been dismissed. We feel his dismissal was not appropriate. The CCMA is quicker at hearing matters than it used to be, so we are hoping for an outcome by February or March."

In 2012, Safa lost a legal battle with former coach Pitso Mosimane who was compensated after he was axed. If what Bollo is saying is anything to go by, then we could be in for another intense legal battle between the association and an unhappy coach. Safa, meanwhile, is looking for a coach with "experience of coaching on the continent" and someone who will hit the ground running for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The body is, however, said not to be in a hurry to appoint a new man.

Bafana are on four points after two matches and need to finish top of the table to qualify for the competition. Sowetan tried to get hold of Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble with no luck, while communications manager Dominic Chimhavi had both his phones off. If Mashaba's legal team succeeds in stopping a new coach's appointment, it could throw the national team's preparations for the World Cup qualifiers into chaos which must be concluded in November.

Safa says no to R4.1m for Shakes

Talks between axed Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba and the SA Football Association (Safa) collapsed yesterday after his former employers declined to pay him a R4.1-million golden handshake as compensation for dismissing him.
Safa was only prepared to pay him one month's salary, which is R583333.33.

Mashaba was demanding seven months' remuneration.

After the failure of the conciliation early yesterday, Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) commissioner Hlalele Molotsi declared the matter ripe for arbitration.

Mashaba wants to be reinstated to the job he was fired from in December.

But Safa told the CCMA that there were no prospects of re-employment as the relationship between the parties had deteriorated following an "inexplicably catastrophic incident" after Bafana's victory in a World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Polokwane in November.

Safa's lawyer Mark Thompson said Mashaba engaged in an antagonistic relationship with the media and his former employers.

Safa even held a workshop with the country's sports editors in April last year, according to Thompson, to mend ways between the coach and the media.

"The applicant [Mashaba] embarrassed himself, Safa and dignitaries," Thompson said. Thompson added that Mashaba did not even show remorse and negative media reports had an impact on Safa and its sponsors.

Safa called its first of six witness, media officer Matlhomola Morake.

Morake said Mashaba's relationship with the media was healthy after his appointment in 2014 but soured due to Bafana Bafana's disastrous campaign at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, where the team failed to win a single match.

He said Mashaba was also angered by a report that he had been a cheap coach.

Morake said he told Mashaba to ignore the report because he knew he was not a cheap coach.

After the Senegal game, Mashaba snubbed pay channel SuperSport until it ran out of time. When the SABC's turn arrived, Mashaba initially refused to do the interview unless he was allowed to speak his mind, according to Morake.

The subsequent rant got him in trouble.

Yeah good luck to Stuart. I do think the problems with SA football are rooted a lot deeper than coaching or national level. The problem is that SAFA keep applying band aid instead of getting down to some rebuilding, which they won't do given their corrupt incompetence. You only have to look at our premier league to see that the issue needs all hands on deck.

Get some development restarted. They destroyed the school of excellence, they destroyed the lower league system. The local junior league system is also plagued by incompetence and rampant corruption where the players age cheat, the people appointment to administrate are put via a system of cronyism and nepotism, etc etc.

Exactly, SAFA is one of the biggest problem with Bafana, and i really hope Baxter has a solid plan and he is able to work closely with the technical director and the coaches in the lower divisions of the National team. Mashaba started well by appointing Da Gama as his assistant, i hope Baxter follows the same example.

I see Carlos Queiroz was tipped but I suppose they balked at the R20m it would have required to get away from Iran. Carlos apparently put together one of the most comprehensive development plans for SAFA when he was coach in '02, but SAFA used it for toilet paper and preferred to rather go buy more Mercs for their execs lol.
