The Bafana Bafana Thread

They may as well give David Notoane the head coach job after the Olympics. He at least knows how to qualify for a major tournament and will have a good idea of the strengths of the youth players.

We need to now start focusing on the youth and being more competitive in Africa.

We are not World Cup worthy nor are we near the quality of the top African sides. The PSL clubs also need to start hiring more coaches from the top African countries when they can't find a local coach rather than opt for some unknown European guy who does not have an impressive record.

At least the guys from the African countries can introduce some strategies which can make our players improve against the top African talent.

For me, this battle is lost long before a player puts on a Bafana shirt. We often have players making their debuts at 25+, a sign of poor development.

We don't train our players properly from u7, that's why we don't have enough 17-19 year olds pushing for PSL places. That's why we don't have enough players moving onto Europe, that's why we don't have the players to win matches.

The problem needs to be fixed at the lowest level, to start the pipeline of properly trained athletes.

Some of them are good enough to go to Europe but the problem is that Bafana Bafana's ranking makes it harder to get into the better leagues and clubs. The EPL clubs will only consider them if they are very special, for instance, Brighton went through a lot of trouble to eventually get Percy Tau and they won't do that for a guy who is just about good enough to cut it in the EPL eg Rivaldo Coetzee.

A few have got offers from places like Denmark, Turkey and Greece where it is easier to get in and turned them down, I know Khune did and Biliiat also mentioned he did. You can earn more playing for a top SA club than from playing for a mid-table club in those leagues.

Disclaimer I know very little about soccer but I can't understand why we so poor in soccer.

Surely we have more soccer players and far better facilities than most other African counties. What is the root cause?

Shouldn't be too surprising - it mirrors the general state of the game in this country. There's been progressively more money with a corresponding decline in quality. SAFA have had the same dinosaurs at the helm since inception. They just recycle them. As unprofessional as ever. And the premier league is run by the same bunch.

Many African national teams use lots of European trained players. While SA has better facilities than Ghana or Senegal, many of those players were raised and trained in Europe.

PSL clubs don't develop players young enough and SA's beat schools often don't offer soccer or move their best athletes into other sports.

Who will be the next Bafana Bafana coach?

I'm currently going to go with Eric Tinkler. He is unemployed and plus he can't command a huge salary as he does not exactly have the profile of McCarthy or Pitso. SAFA's money problems will play a huge role in the next appointment and it was also definitely why Ntseki got the job in the first place.

I can't really think of anyone else with a decent reputation locally that is available.

It would actually be good if they bring back Muhsin Ertugral in a advisor, director role. The guy knows his football and is very technical though he's a bit too emotional and erratic to be a head coach.

True, in the Francophone African countries, many of the players started their development as young as five and here, it only starts in the teens. The Algerian team is basically a France B team of guys who just missed the cut for France but qualify for Algeria through ancestry.

Those lost years play a massive role in development.

This is a slightly controversial opinion but I do think the 1996 team is overrated. Clive Barker seems like a nice guy but he was more of a mentor and hardly technical. His lack of depth was the reason no big club in SA wanted to hire him in the PSL and he was mainly limited to the mid-table teams.

I also would not put it past FIFA to have influenced the outcome of that 1996 Afcon, we know they were heavily corrupt. It also would have been in their best financial interests to do so as we had just become a democracy.

FIFA almost definitely played a hand in South Korea's run to the 2002 World Cup semis and they probably did many dark things before that.

It's likely that the SA players of today would beat the 96 team because they are much more technical nowadays.

Well it seems then than a new coach will not make a difference or maybe they should just get Rassie or Jake for a while.

The coach can make a difference, you obviously have to have someone who knows strategy etc. It will make a difference against evenly matches and lower-ranked sides to us.

But you put them against a top nation and no coach will make a difference.

At this level coaching and leadership makes all the difference. It is a team sport afterall. And at the top level the players are all fairly matched in skill.

Psychology and motivation is probably the biggest factors.

I haven't watched banana in a while. But the fact that they don't even seem to be trying(have no killer instinct) was evident.

If they get that right and play with some passion more people will support them again and they'll do better.

Getting rid of racial nonsense and politics would also help.

They have a very small grouping of coaches that they recycle through. Expect one of them to come back with no plan or clue.
Anyways, couldn't care less about SA soccer. They'll never win unless they stop with third rate "coaches". None of our national coaches would coach a 3 division English team.

You don't really follow any local football do you? Because there are no racial issues and politics in our local football, it's the beautiful game and no history of exclusion and self styled gatekeepers in football, no political intervention is required.

Lol,

I don't think a white coach in SA would be any less likely to be considered for the Bafana coaching position. Gordon Igesund had it and was strongly backed, so was Clive Barker. Barker is regarded as a legend and achieved something great but personally I don't think he was a good coach.

Currently many are backing Eric Tinkler for the job even though he does not have the best CV around.

Several figures in football have called for more whites to get involved in the game. There are plenty of coloreds involved in the game.

Benni and Pitso may as well reject it, especially if they want to coach in Europe.

If Pitso makes a success of his time in Al Ahly, he might attract offers from the US or Europe.

Benni will almost definitely get offers from Europe if he carries on at his current rate with AmaZulu and the fact that he was a successful player in Europe also helps.

History suggests that whoever takes the job will end up leaving on a bad note and if one of them takes it, they risk having a huge blemish on their CV which might make it less likely for foreign teams to consider them.

The chances are high that even if they don't take it now, they will get a chance in the near future. Bafana Bafana coaches hardly last more than three years.

We have some decent coaches. Gavin Hunt is currently doing badly but his history suggests he is good at getting the best out of teams with mediocre resources.

Pitso Mosimane is great and Benni McCarthy looks like he has a lot of potential. His AmaZulu side which is made up of B+ players by PSL standards is currently one of the top form sides.

Benni might take it. He's coached in Portugal and don't think he was too successful. Safa can't afford Pitso any longer. They also had huge contractual issues with him last time plus they paid him too much and paid even more to be rid of him. Mainly because of their own ineptitude.
