The Banting/LCHF Thread

my sis got some wheat protein isolate flour n made some bread and rolls .... they came out gr8
much better than what i've eaten here so far ... will put up some pix as soon as i get them.

cant wait for the wraps and the pizza bases that have real crust and doesn't taste or smell
of flaxseed
Wheat protein isolate still contains starch, wheat, gluten and carbs though....

^ old school doctors ... imagine how many other sh|t they get wrong

I hope one day, when I'm a grumpy and stubborn old man, that I'll be more open-minded and willing to admit I was wrong, especially compared to some people ;)

After five decades of indoctrination it's understandable that people will be wary about fat, but at the same time you don't need a degree in medicine to realise that the one-size-fits-all standard dietary advice we've been giving people for the last half a century isn't working for a vast majority of the population.

You don't have to be old to be closed minded, just try debating nutrition with Thor187

I failed LCHF so many times I'm back at my old weight now.

I need something simple, not all these complicated "eat 7 things a day and switch it up every day that costs R3k a week to make" deals.

Eggs / Broccoli for breakfast. Fish/Lamb/Chicken for dinner with avo and broccoli or cauliflower. And some bullet proof coffee.

Is that fine as a diet? Because I can keep up with that easy peasy

Use Myfitness Pal to track your intake. That's fine as a diet, but you're going to get bored.

You can try intermittent fasting. And just try to limit your carbs at the same time.

I'm doing a combo of IF and LCHF and the results are great. Granted I am at 13 or 14% bodyfat at the moment and I am trying to get down to 10.

Personally this is one of the things that is attractive to me about intermittent fasting. If you don't have the time to cook eggs for breakfast, just don't eat breakfast! What tends to happen if you force yourself to eat breakfast, is that it becomes too much effort to keep it up everyday, so you get lazy and go back to Kellog's Corn Flakes. Because your whole life, you have been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and you need to eat at least 3 meals per day, and eating something like 7 meals per day is better for weight loss.

All complete rubbish.

If making breakfast is a hassle, just don't eat breakfast. Eat what you would normally eat for breakfast, when you have the time to make it. Eat it when you have time to enjoy it properly, not rush through making it and rush through eating it.

I'd add more vegetables. There's more than just broccoli & cauliflower. Oven roast veg is the easiest thing to make. Steamed. Raw with a hummus dip. A few tomatoes, a slice of green pepper. Greens...spinach, rocket.

That. Most meals I have lots of veg either roasted or steamed: cauli, broc, marrows etc. And meat :D!

Trying to convince people about LCHF is on the same level as to try to convince people their belief system is wrong as well

Yeah, you disagree with them and you may as well be a blasphemous heathen :D

For veggies pretty much everything excluding potatoes, carrots and butternut is fine.

Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, baby marrow, gem squash, pumpkin, turnips, radishes, eggplant/brinjals, brussels sprouts, asparagus are all okay to have

Onions, peppers and tomatoes are okay as well as long as long as you keep the portions reasonable

Then there's also mushrooms, olives, gherkins, tree nuts (excl. cashews)

Also failing miserably here. I feel like an addict who's left rehab and gone back to my drug of choice :)

Besides which, how do you afford the eating plan. Yesterday's attempt:

Breakfast:
Half pack of bacon @ R42 per pack - R21
2 x Eggs @ R18 per doz - R3
Tablespoon of cheese mixed into omelette

Lunch:
Approx third tin of coconut cream @ R39 per tin - R13
Quarter container of cream @ R16 - R4
Some frozen berries @ R59 per 400g - say R10

Dinner:
200g Pork mince at R44 per 400g - R22
200g Cauliflower mince @ R22 per 300g - R14
Some Kale

That's R87!!!!!!!!!!

Also had what I shouldn't have - 1 x peach R4.50, 1 x apricot R4.50 and a banana.

R100 per day is ridiculous.

Conversely R100 per day spent on cakes, artisan breads, snacks and cool drinks would be perfectly acceptable.

Half a pack bacon for breakfast? :wtf:

Change lunch to "leftovers from last night"

Start buying cauliflower and broccoli in the frozen 1kg packs.

And pork mince at R120/kg?? Where are you buying your meat? Woolworths?

Yah, check your shopping prices but also berries are hectically expensive, use alternates for lunch.

Coconut milk and cream is R20 for a 400ml can at Fruit n Veg/Spar/(and Woolies when on special)
Both bacon and berries are pretty expensive per kg, definitely not an everyday staple for me

The bulk of my shopping list is more or less:

Meat:
  • Stewing beef, potjiekos beef, pork shank @ R50~60/kg. Throw it in the slowcooker until it's soft and tender.
  • Gammon/pork belly roast if it's on special (R60/kg)
  • Chicken breasts and thighs (bone-in, skin-on) (R35~40/kg)
  • Chicken and lamb liver (R35~40/kg)
  • (proper) Steak, lamb and seafood I don't eat regularly because of the price
  • Mince, wors and burgers I'm not really a fun of buying at the supermarket because you always have to check what else (filler) is in it and how much % meat you're actually getting for your money.
Veggies:
  • Cauli/brocc (R20 pre/pack)
  • Lettuce, spinach, cucumber, cabbage halves (R10 ea)
  • Eggplant, gem squash, bell peppers (R5~7 ea)
  • Turnips (R10/bunch)
  • Onions (R10~15/kg)
Always try and buy veg loose and have it weighed rather than buying the prepacks, it's much cheaper.

Dairy:
  • Cream R14~16 per 250ml
  • Double cream yoghurt R24 per 1L
  • Butter R40 per 500g (try and stock up when it's on special)
  • Cheddar, mozzarella and feta I try and aim for < R90/kg on special
  • Mascarpone, ricotta, halloumi, cream cheese are my treats (not recommended if you're trying to lose weight)

Looking at last years budgeting, I spent R750 p/m on meat, R460 on dairy, R350 on veg, R100 on eggs)

Rest of groceries (coffee, mushrooms, nuts, oil, dark choco, spices) add up to about R600.

So, R75 per day, which isn't much better than R87 :o

  • Cream R14~16 per 250ml

  • Pro-tip: If you look around you can find brands other than Clover which are cheaper and aren't disgusting. I just bought a 1L Honeydew from a local Spar which was R30.

On the topic, I don't mind spending more on food and subsequently, my health.
