The Banting/LCHF Thread

I used to use Hullets sucralose sweetner, love it, didnt miss sugar at all. I dont understand why it cant be used for Banting.

At the moment it's neither here nor there. It's not natural, but it's also not sugar.

I don't crave anything either. Xylitol and Stevia is a damn lot more expensive than Sucralose as well. I get the 100 sachet pack at a local store for R26 vs R70 plus for Xylitol or Stevia

Selati has a special at Checkers, its 300 tabs + 200 free for R44, be damned if I pay R70 for Xylitol or Stevia, ill be bankrupted :p

You use so little Stevia that I doubt it. Just the tip of the teaspoon for coffee and tea.

Any bodybuilders in this thread? How are you coping with the energy lows in the gym? I'm not talking about general tiredness - cardio is fine, I'm talking no spark between the muscle fibres when you push heavy... it's like my muscles are totaly devoid of glycogen (which may be normal for banting diet?). It's no fun at all. Try ekeing out 50 pullups with that kind of low energy. I'm even on NO pre-workout and it's just not cutting it. Is there no way to get those glycogen stores going without eating carbs?

/off to post in the BB thread

Bullet proof coffee before workouts gives you a good healthy buzz!

Was out of coffee this morning, so made a bullet proof tea instead with Red Espresso.

Was good :)

PS, here are some other interesting bullet proof coffee recipes.

Question about the bullet proof coffee.

Currently I'm only drinking water, nothing else. Will drinking the bullet proof coffee help weight loss more than just drinking water?

It will up your HR and BP a little. That might in turn help with general metabolism... Good coffee has benefits, as does good butter. Butter in particular supposedly has benefits for weight loss, but personally I think it's hair splitting.
If it means that's all you have for breakfast, perhaps that helps, but you have to make sure you get your micros (vitamins, minerals, etc.) too. BP coffee won't give you that.

Don't seem to be able to win with coffee.

Some confusion regarding coffee.

Originally it was "coffee as much as you like" (with cream not milk).

Then it was just coffee (with cream not milk).

Then I came across this:

TOP 10 REASONS WHY YOU’RE NOT LOSING WEIGHT EATING LCHF

Caffeine – caffeine is a stimulant which increases you adrenaline (short term hormone that gets you out of danger – “fight or flight”). It stimulates the liver to release glucose from its glycogen stores. What happens next? This new high level of glucose causes insulin to be released again, fat gets stored and fat burning turns off. If weight loss has stopped, can’t sleep, too stressed, stop the caffeine. You don’t have to give up your coffee, but just have a decaffeinated coffee and see how you feel.

But, it seems decaf coffee is the devil.

Why Bad Coffee Makes You Weak

The data on coffee consumption goes back and forth. Some studies show health benefits, while others show negative outcomes. This might seem confusing, but the reason is simple: bad coffee is bad for you, and scientists suck at differentiating types of coffee when they run studies on coffee.
Studies on coffee and health don’t control for processing methods or the source of the beans. This means the coffee beans are almost always contaminated with mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are damaging compounds created by molds which grow on coffee beans (among other things). These compounds cause all sorts of health problems like cardiomyopathy, cancer, hypertension, kidney disease, and even brain damage. They also make your coffee taste bitter, like it needs sugar.
Some types of coffee have more mycotoxins than others, which is why you see some studies showing a benefit to drinking coffee, and others showing negative health outcomes. The problem isn’t coffee per se, it’s the mold on your coffee. It even can vary by individual batch, especially for large coffee producers. (like ones with big ugly green logos on every street corner)
Mycotoxins are in almost all low quality brands of coffee. One study showed that 91.7% of green coffee beans were contaminated with mold. This is before they were processed, which allows even more mold to grow. Another study showed 52% of green coffee beans and almost 50 percent of brewed coffees are moldy. Coffee is easily one of the largest sources of mycotoxins in the food supply. The data on coffee consumption goes back and forth. Decaf coffee is even worse. Caffeine is a natural anti-insect and antifungal defense mechanism for the plant. It deters mold and other organisms from growing on the beans. Mold is everywhere, but caffeine helps prevent it from growing on the beans while they’re in storage. When you remove the caffeine, your beans are defenseless. Decaf coffee is higher in both aflatoxin and ochratoxin.

Nothing is even straight forward :erm:

Water is king. I need to drink more BPC though, I find when I do I tend not to exceed my protein target for the day since the fats in BPC (butter+MCT Oil) keep me satiated for a lot of the day.

I doubt 1 or 2 coffees a day are going to make much difference, as for anything coming from the BPExec, well he has his own coffee brand and co-products to sell...

Also, when lowcarbing, your liver HAS no glycogen stores.

However, this is probably a good way to hasten the passing of the low blood sugar headaches of keto flu :D
