The Banting/LCHF Thread

A heads up, I see Anja's Pantry is closing down so everything on their website is 50% off. You can pick up certain caring candies chocolates for R7.50. https://anjaspantry.co.za/ shipping is unfortunately pretty crazy at R99

Maltitol just doesn't sit with me. I bloat like hell and I put on about 2kg of water weight. Takes me about a week to lose all that water weight.

Im not sure if there will be loose skin for me (I have seen enough Youtube videos to know it might happen), I really don't know if I will be able to deal with it regardless if im thin. How bad is yours if I might ask?
Hey guys, I just found this thread today and I've just reached my second month on OMAD, lost 9kgs... Down from 92.4kg to 83.3kg.
Couldn't help but notice the talk about loose skin which doesn't apply to me but maybe it'll help you guys avoid/minimise surgery.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but try and look up Autophagy, a state when your body recycles old or non essential cells when in a state of prolonged fasting. So in theory if you could maintain long periods of autophagy, your skin would literally shrink around and accommodate your smaller frame.

Hey, yes I have done a lot of reading around Autophagy, seems it would make a bit of a difference. I am really worried about the loose skin thing seeing as I am coming from a 152cm waist (currently down to 120cm). I have started prolonged fasting about a month ago after doing OMAD for about 3 month. I started with 48 hour fasts and I'm now consistently doing 72 hour fasts.

I must say the weight is falling off me with this, I am currently down 30KG all ready. There is so much information out there about these long fasts and after spending hours and hours researching about it, it really made sense to me. So I'm now fully committed to it. People need to lose their fear of fasting its not as bad as you may think it is.

Be careful of fasting excessively. If your body can't find certain fuels, it will begin to consume your muscle mass which is what you DON'T want. The idea behind LCHF is that you substitute carbs with fats for fuel but you still need to maintain a good protein level. I don't strictly follow fasts but for example most weekend I don't consume a lot, small breakfast and one major meal a day but lighter. I've comfortably gone with a shake for saturday breakfast, a meduim sized lunch and then only dinner the following day. Listen to your body and drink water, lot of times a person feels hungry, it's either cravings or thirst.

You body will not consume your muscles mass then you fast, here is an excellent video explaining :

Hey Guys

Just a check-in. 61kgs total lost as of this weekend. 60kgs was the 1 year goal I set when I started at the end of January. Really happy to have hit this in 10 months. Glad I won't have to go through December worrying about hitting that goal.

@spargish Well done!! :) Keep up the great health!

I have now naturally progressed to 1 meal a day, just sort of happened this last week actually. Also the video linked above by @BBSA also helped convince me (and not to mention how great I feel ) that fasting longer is very beneficial. I was always convinced about the pre history eating of early man; we evolved on it. Current society eats way too much and way too often. Not to mention I can spend way less on food!

Since I last week I can see I look slimmer again. My fat loss stagnated a bit. I lost 1kg from august to halfway through November, when I switched to IF. I haven't weight myself yet. I am ready to go into a 3 day fast starting today. By end of Nov, I want to break 71 kg, my nemesis!

I have now been fasting more than 56 hours. My last meal was Sunday night around 6pm. Before that I had been doing 1 meal a day since the Wednesday. I am doing a five day fast till Friday night. I will only consume water, black coffee and rooibos tea.

So far I think I have noticed a slightly elevated resting heart rate. Also I have finally broken my fat burning stagnation. I have dropped 1 kg since Wed last week! (yay) .

The first and second day were difficult, because my mind said to eat but my body was not that convinced it was hungry. It is amazing how much eating is actually learnt culturally. It is now the third day and I am more motivated than ever especially seeing the fat drop off . It is easier to not want to eat now.

I am going to play tennis today and I will see how that goes without food since Sunday!

Yeah its pretty cool, I am also on day 4 of 7 now. Just keep in mind you will gain about 1 - 1.5 kg again after your refeed, but that will drop again come next fast.

Also how cool is it not pooping for 4days right... So much more time for other activities now and the savings on white gold too ! :)

Why would I put on again!? I would assume, there is temp weight of the actual food one eats...but a permanent increase of 1 - 1.5kg!?

AH MAN, if so then I didnt lose any fat!? :(

Today I weighed in at 69.4kg. My lowest before the fast and 1 meal a day was 71.5kg. So hopefully still remain under that.

Oh, totally forgot take my ketone readings, Just took one now after almost 5 days of fasting.

my count was 4.8mmol/L

UPTO, it all depends on your metabolism but don't worry if you experience swings, watch the midpoint and see if that decreases.

If you haven't already done so, do yourself a favour and get a copy of The Obesity Code by Dr Jason Fung. I read it earlier this year after finding myself at the shocking weight of 73kg. I've been intermittent fasting for just over eight months, eating my meal in one hour , love this way of eating and will never go back to eating three meals. However, being vegetarian, I don't do low carb. The weight still fell off. Been 58kg for a while now.

I have plenty of "cheat" days where I fast for 16 hours, eat for 8. I gain about a kg in water weight which comes off in about two days. Reading the book will help you understand what your body is going through when you fast... you'll learn about growth hormone and appetite control, you won't freak out when the scale goes up, you'll understand the role of insulin and you'll learn that the scale is a big fat liar!
