The Banting/LCHF Thread

What do you mean....is fruit bad whilst banting because the carbs therein will cause you to get carb cravings & fall off the wagon or is it bad because of the fructose? Sorry, but I'm also still struggling to get to grips with how banting does work.

Fructose is the carb, the problem with fructose is it's metabolised differently to glucose, fructose is metabolised in the liver and is pretty much converted directly into fats for storage as opposed to being used for energy. Fruits have been hybridised over the last century or so to make them much sweeter than they originally where, so they have a much higher fructose content these days.

Nope, don't eat tomatoes except as miniscule amounts in mincemeat sometimes.
yuk.

OK, so for different reasons then. Not because they were only available to our ancestors one week a year or they have too much sugar.

Strictly speaking they're a berry - and berries are not as fructose-y as other fruit. As was mentioned, Atkins allows introduction of berries in small quantities in the later stages of the weight loss programme, but cautions to be aware of them triggering cravings.
And if I ate a tomato and got a glycaemic response then I'd sure as hell avoid them in future.

Oh, I don't avoid them "because they were only available to our ancestors once a year". I question their necessity to a "healthy" diet because of this reason. Big difference.

2.6g of carb per 100, that's hardly fructose-y.

You can't feed somebody low carb, and then give them a glucose tolerance test!!!!!
Has anyone done any long term studies on glucose tolerance with LCHF? Is there any chance of your pancreas becoming 'lazy' and less responsive in the long run? A bit like how guys who shoot up with roids regularly lose their ability to produce testosterone naturally.

Reading all this and would really like to know, in this case is a lemon also bad? Does it contain fructose?

Juice of 1 medium lemon (a little over 1.5 oz): 4 grams effective (net) carbohydrate plus 0 grams fiber and 12 calories.

Yup.

I do, I also like eating lemons & seriously had no idea there was any fructose at all in them.

A few drops isn't going to hurt. Go easy on the whole lemons if you're serious about counting carbs and ketosis.

2.5g of sugar per 100g in a lemon. Don't listen to him.
2.8g of dietry fibre in a lemon too... so of the 9g carbs, net is around 6.2g.

She (i assume she? apologies if wrong) asked if there was fructose in a lemon. The answer is yes. Quit with your selective reading...
If you're sticking to around 20g of carbs a day, then 6.2 net is one third of your entire allowance for the day ...
