Spyshots: 2023 BMW M2

We’ve seen the all-new BMW 2 Series revealed, but what about the 2023 BMW M2 performance coupe? Here it is wearing heavy camouflage on the Nurburgring.

Many petrolheads would say the BMW M2 is one of the M division’s finest products, exceeding expectations and selling in huge numbers. The BMW M2 CS was the crowning glory, taking every element of the M2 experience and turning it up to 11.

Now that the all-new next-generation BMW 2 Series has been revealed with bold and fresh styling, attention has turned to the all-new 2023 BMW M2. These spy photographs show the new model undergoing dynamic testing where else but the Nurburgring. The new BMW 2 Series in M240i xDrive guise looks aggressive and purposeful, so the new M2 will be even bolder in terms of looks.

Expect the trademark big wheels and quad exhaust setup, as well as flared wheel arches that hide big wheels wrapped in performance rubber. What’s under the bonnet though? The BMW M2 CS featured the straight-6 turbocharged petrol engine lifted straight from the previous-generation BMW M3/M4. It was tuned to deliver 331 kW / 550 Nm, and in comparison, the all-new M240i xDrive packs 285 kW and 500 Nm. Given where the new BMW M3 and M4 are positioned with their 375 kW and 650 Nm powerplants, we reckon it’s not unreasonable to expect this new engine to power the M2. Now we can’t have the baby M standing on the toes of its siblings, so the S58 engine could be detuned to around 340 kW and 550 Nm.

New 2022 BMW M2 coupe begins advanced road tests

Rear-drive 420bhp M2 will pave the way for an M2 Gran Coupé and fiery full-fat M 1 Series

BMW is developing a new rear-wheel-drive M2 performance coupé, as part of a future compact M car line-up that will include a four-wheel-drive M2 Gran Coupé and a 1 Series with more than 400bhp.

The second-generation M2 coupé, which takes the internal codename G87, is scheduled to go on sale in the UK in 2022. It will bring with it a detuned version of BMW M’s latest six-cylinder petrol engine, sourced from the new M3 and M4.

Despite the heavy camouflage of this newly spotted prototype, it looks as if the M2 will feature angular front end styling influenced more by the Z4 and M8 than the controversially big-grilled M3 and M4. Flared arches, big performance wheels and a quad-exit exhaust will be the most obvious visual differentiators from the standard 2 Series, but upsized air intakes and aero-enhancing trim will likely complete the look.

This twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol unit, dubbed S58, replaces the similarly configured S55 used by the current M2 and promises the same high-revving characteristics, with a redline of 7200rpm.

Nothing is official at this early stage, but insiders hint that the S58 engine will be tuned to provide the new junior M car with at least 420bhp in standard form – a 16bhp increase over today’s M2 Competition – to top the 416bhp of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-AMG A45 S.

Next-generation BMW M2 to use S58 twin-turbo detuned to 294 kW?

Now that the 2 Series range has been officially revealed, all eyes are on the next-generation BMW M2 which, based on a new report, will adopt the S58 twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre straight six in a detuned state.

According to information sourced from Auto Express via a network of spies, the next-generation BMW M2, which will bear the G87 code name, will not suffer from downsizing but the S58 mill will be detuned to avoid the sports compact from being more competitive than the larger M3 and M4 duo.

In base guise, it’s understood that the next-generation BMW M2 will sport a power output figure around the 294 kW region which is just a yard stick away from the all-wheel drive M240i’s output of 285 kW produced from the firm’s B58 twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six. The report goes on to assure that the M2 will remain rear-wheel drive throughout the range together with the option of a six-speed manual or eight-speed torque converter.

A Competition state will be made available for the next-generation BMW M2 as well. It’s believed that this will offer a power output of around 320 kW which is just a bit shy of the outgoing M2 Clubsport’s figure of 331 kW.

What about changes to the chassis? Now adopting the CLAR platform, it’s stated that the next-generation BMW M2 will benefit from a widened track and stiffer chassis over the M240i. For added dynamic prowess, the M Sport differential will be fitted as standard together with a set of stronger brakes. Chassis options could consist of the brand’s stroke-dependent mechanical damper technology or M Sport adaptive electromechanical dampers.

The current M2 should have been using the S55 from the get go. I get the occasional rough looks when I slightly imply that the M2 isn’t a full M-Car.

Next BMW M2 To Be Rear-Wheel-Drive With Manual Transmission As Option

The internet has been flooded with talk about the next-gen (G87) BMW M2 with most stating that the little M bimmer will get xDrive as an option.

According to BMWBlog sources, this is not true and will send all the power to the rear wheels only.

Purists rejoice, this will be a rear-drive, front-engine sports car with a manual transmission. Yes, you read that correctly, the manual will live on (as an option) despite pretty much everything else going auto-only.

Madness, this thing must be a fun handful…
