Slightly off topic...

But do any of you guys use bluetooth/wireless earphones while working out? Tips, recommendations?

I've been using a small little BT speaker in the garage but it has been acting up lately and I want to replace it. Otherwise I use my standard earphones that came with my phone when doing cardio (jogging/spinning bike). If I can use the BT/Wireless earphones for both purposes it would be a nice little bonus.

Not looking to break the bank. I've seen some earphones go for R2k+. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! I'll then just sing to myself :D
I do. Cheapies from china, cost 10 dollars and last 5 hours on a charge.

Have magnets on earphones so when you take them off for a short while, they stay around your neck safely.

For their price its decent quality sound.

Thanks guys.

I'm not a massive sound snob (not saying you are The Voice :p) but I do enjoy to listen to something else than the passing cars and barking dogs in afternoon rush hour / walking time.

Thanks for the tip about hook ons. I also have non-standard ears. Can use regular old fashioned earphones but not these sound isolating earphones with the rubber fittings. They do not stay/fit in my narrow canals.

Might pop into Makro tomorrow and see what options they have. Still have an ebucks gift card from them.

I had a set of those as well. Hate them as they just seem to pick up interference from other sources. If you going to use them in a crowded gym, I wouldn't bother.

How do you pick up interference on digital signal? Mine works no issue in peak times in Tygervalley

Picked up a pair of Skullcandy Ink'd Wireless earphones at Makro just now.

They are not hook on but they had a sample in the shop and with the smaller rubber fittings they actually fitted nicely. Seems they are bit smaller than the previous sound isolating ones I tried that always fell out.

Anyway. Going to give them a go later this afternoon and will provide feedback.

Works very well.

Yet to test it out with running but for the gym part it is exactly what I was looking for.

Regarding OHP and any sort of pushing exercises, ever since an injury occurred in my right shoulder (possibly shoulder impingement) i refrained from doing these for the past 2 years . I would test now and again and still the issue persisted. After going to physio again to sort out my neck mobility, in the last 2 months it came right. I've resumed pushups (every 2 or 3 days) and dumbell press (neutral grip) at gym and and now (last night) shoulder press with dumbells, so far so good. Keeping the weight light and avoiding ego lifting. Nothing worse than being injured and not being able to push stuff!

When i do pullups at home (maxxus bar mounted above door frame), something is still not quite lekker still in my right shoulder, so I'm going to have to be careful and see what if anything aggravates the situation again.

+1 on the skullcandy in ear buds. I bought a brand new samsung level headset and after a week cut the earbuds off and put my wired skullcandy earbuds on in their place. I'll buy one of those next. Probably cost a lot less than the R800 I paid for these samsungs and the earpieces work way better.
*EDIT* I see you paid R600 - that's definitely worth it!

Now that the OHP is getting heavy for me.. I find that I'm overarching my back in order to extend my arms. I'm sure this is going to give me lower back problems. I found this to try and fix it :

Excess Arching

Your lower back must stay neutral when you Overhead Press. Keeping a natural arch like when you stand. Don’t lean back by when you struggle to press the weight. Extreme arching of your lower spine (hyper-extension) squeezes your spinal discs from the back. Add the loading of the bar, and you can suffer a bad lower back injury like a herniated disc. Don’t allow extreme arching of your lower back. Stay neutral.

Note that you should lean back when you Overhead Press. This moves your head out of the way of the bar. It allows you to press in a vertical line which is more effective. But this lean back must come from your hips. Keep your lower back neutral while moving your hips forward. Do this before the bar leaves your shoulders, not after or during. Once the bar moves, don’t lean back more. Move your torso forward to stay close to the bar.

If you can’t stop your lower back from arching, get tighter. Take a bigger breath before you press the weight. Squeeze your abs as if somebody was going to punch you in the stomach. Wearing a belt when you Overhead Press can cue you to squeeze your abs by giving them something to push against. if your lower back continues to hyper-extend, your abs are weak. Be patient and they’ll get stronger. Or add assistance for your abs.

Any other tips?

I would say activate the glutes, I feel more solid/stable pressing up when the glutes and core are working together

Cool.. will try that next time.. but I fear that might need to wait a bit. I hurt my lower back yesterday during my Saturday Construction stint at home :(

I'm on anti-inflammatory tablets and voltaren gel at the moment. Can I continue lifting once the pain subsides in a few days' time or must I wait longer?

I used to activate my glutes, and lock my legs. This would basically prevent me from "cheating", as well as stabilising everything during the move. Can't OHP anymore though cause of my impingement. Thankfully I've started physio - turns out I need to "teach" my shoulder to work properly again before I can start loading the tendon and muscles. Have been off training for 3 weeks now, so going back us going to be tough. Will probably swap out OHP for more BP or something.

Have you tried using a weight belt? I used to have lower back issues when lifting and then decided to try one out. Haven't looked back.

+1 on the belt.

I know some people say it is a cop out but I use a belt for almost everything that involves the back because I have no partner/spotter and I rather minimize the risk of injury. It is also an excellent cue to remember to activate your core each and every time because you actually feel your abs/core pressing against the belt.

I have used JBL Reflect BT and JBL Yurbuds Leap BT wireless headphones and both broke multiple times within the warranty period due to sweat shorting out the buttons.

I bought a cheapo pair from China, but they were too heavy and kept falling out.

The best I have found so far are Plantronics Backbeat. The controls are on the outside of the ears out of harm's way. Great quality. 8 hours battery when new. Haven't broken yet.
