The Bodybuilders Thread: Circuit II

Since I stopped using supplements and going 'natural' aka eating right and drinking water. I have found that I am actually feeling a lot stronger and have seen at least a 10 percent increase in my workload.

My goals for this year are:
Bench 120kg x 10
Squat 180kg x 10
Run 42.2km (Soweto Marathon so around November)

Update #1 had to change my Soweto marathon run to 21km sadly. I will see 42.2km after Soweto.

I was about to solo bench 100kg 10 reps x2 without assistance and proper form lol. Squats I am at 130kgs 10 reps x3 to 90 degrees and running I am doing solo runs 15kms still so happy with that.

Current weight 86kg

Yoh, it's been quite in here guys - whats up?
I am recovering from the worst DOMS in ages. I've been out of the gym far too long now so it's going to take something to get back. Going to couple workouts with a cycle or run on the treadmill for starters. My legs tho - eina! I've been doing supersets and concentrating on 1 or two muscle groups per workout. Happy to be getting back into it though.

You should be averaging around 50km a week for your first marathon, peaking at 70km. And that is pretty much the minimum level. It's pretty rough doing that mileage and lifting heavy multiple times a week. Doing a 21km is probably more realistic anyway.

I am also doing the 21km. Was going to do the marathon, but life has kind of made sure that won't happen. Lost a ton of fitness over the last 8 weeks as I have barely been able to train. Getting back into things is going to be rough.

So true. I am finding that I am travelling often and it was hard to train and run. I did a 21km with a local JHB running crew and I felt terrible but I did finish. One surprise was that my 10km improved and I did my first sub 1hour (59:22).

So after quitting CrossFit, mainly due to burnout, about 4 months ago I was at Viva gym in Fourways yesterday trying to jump start a new gym routine. Got there with the intention to do some squats and deadlifts mainly. There was a guy at the only squat rack available. Okay no big deal I thought, will do some seated calf raises while I wait.

After I was done the same guy was still at the rack and 2 others were waiting in line! Okay I think, let me try deadlifts. Firstly I'm not sure how the gym views deadlifts even if controlled, but all the bars were taken and there wasn't much floor space to use anyway.

Needless to say I was a bit turned off, packed my bag went home and cancelled the membership.

So now I'm thinking, do I go back to CF (Where I don't have to wait in line) even though it is expensive, do I try another commercial gym (Is PF or VA any better?) or is there anything else in the area I'm not aware of. I rent a small place so a home gym isn't feasible unless I try some sort of basic calisthenics routine.

Agh, just a bit frustrated right now :/

Commercial gyms, blech protein vomit. Look to find the independent guys in your area. You know, the kind of gym where 3/4 aren’t taken up by stationary bikes. The place where I gym has a massive virgin a couple of blocks away, but it still has a large following cause they prioritize weight lifting

Why does the stench linger so long? You'll see that guy following you with his mop around the bathroom oblivious to the smell.

What time do you usually go to the gym?

Well "usually" it would have to be around 4pm - 6pm en route home after work. I looked around for any local independent gyms etc... but can't find anything.

I guess my only options are to try odd hours (Off-peak) or go back to doing CF :/

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the afternoon royal rumble.....

I'm part of the Zone fitness gyms and luckily I can go during lunch because my work is flexible.

The mornings are also a great time to go if you can, mostly cardio bunnies up at that time and serious lifters. I used to do mornings but decided to use the time to study instead.

Anyone you gym with or alone?

I gym alone. Not much of a social person :)

I've deadlift with dumbells when the bar was in use. I mainly do legs on mondays as that's when most krag-apies do chest. Then Saturdays again. Lots of gym's are quiet on Fridays as well.

I thought about this too. I mainly dead lift with dumbbells, but the heaviest ones are 15kgs at Planet Fitness. Seems a bit light for male lifters though, so I don't think it's a real solution.

Planet Fitness in Fourways is pretty quiet in the mornings (in the lifting areas), after 19h30, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Oh wow I did not realize they don't have the heavier ones. At my Virgin Active they have up to 60Kg.

Talking about deadlifts...

I'm suffering with a smile today.

After dropping deadlifts from my routine about a year ago due to a recurring back niggle I decided to start incorporating them back into one of my core days at a relatively light weight.

Checked my logging app and I stopped at 3 x 6 with 168kg last year so thought 100kg would be a safe and easy place to restart....

Haha. Brought down to earth quickly. I totally forgot how taxing DL was. First set was a breeze. Second was difficult. Third was a fail at rep 4.

My arse and back are totally feeling it today.

Experience has taught me that it will get better and back to old standards relatively quickly but it certainly didn't make it any less embarrassing.

Just wish I could be more disciplined with my diet. Last few months have been such a miss and hit.

Quality time with kids, good friends visiting and a few mini vacations here and there meant diet took a back seat every 2 to 3 weeks.

But not regretting anything. Great memories with the family. And kids loved the bit more relaxed and laid back dad. Nothing like some midnight ice cream and chocolate with your 5yo daughter while camping in the middle of the Bush.

CAN I SUGGEST EVERYONE DEADLIFT WITH A HEX BAR AT LEAST ONCE?

SAVE YOUR BACK AND KNEES. Look at YouTube vids, it's seriously under valued. kxthx

What are you aiming for in your diet?

Ironically I've lost weight and body fat while NOT doing gym. Almost 2 months of carnivore diet and I've lost around 8kg's  And aside from limiting yourself to meat, eggs, biltong, seafood only - you can eat as much as you want. I will eat rice if forced to have a side (I find it doesn't make me feel ill like other carbs now), but try my best to stay in keto (no carbs).

I'm curious to see how I perform, energy-wise, and what sort of gains can be had while working out on this diet though. Was supposed to be a 1 month experiment but now I sort of don't want to go back. Though I do miss a good dessert or milkshake now and then :p
