Hmmm, wish there was a source and date for that data.
Could be old, as Nutritech had their protein independently tested, was around the time they put their prices up.

I would like to see this done by an independent lab - strange how the Dischem brands appear to have done so well in a report posted on Dischem's website

Maybe because USN and biogen got nailed in carte blanche a few years ago :/

Sources and contact persons.

Short report on study.

Looks like the study is very recent.

You'd be a fool to trust USN and Biogen data, but in all fairness, its possible they've cleaned up their act.

Exactly, like it was a paid for article by USN/Biogen.I trust no protein powder, only raw eggs.No bloating, no farting(ok maybe a little), no tummy problems.

Thanks for the link, dated October 2015.
Another problem is they tested total protein content, how many of those manufacturers are using soy protein to push up the figures.
I am a little worried with Nutritech's results, since it's my preferred protein. I would love to see a response from them.

EDIT - Seems like they caught on to the report...

Ive found fresh chicken breasts (R59.99 per kg at Food Lover and Pick n Pay) to be cheaper than protein shakes when you look at the price your paying per gram of protein. And its guarantee protein content. You should only use protein shakes if you want to make smoothies.

I have also gone off protein shakes to be honest, I have no issue eating a can of tuna or eggs after a gymming session.

Why not buy the chicken breasts with the back bone on and skin. It works out far cheaper with just a little effort to take the back bone and the skin off which can be done with your hand and there you have a fillet. It goes for R39.99 per kg. Now if you eat atleast 5 kg of chicken a week it works out to savings of +-R400 savings for the month.

Protein shakes should only be used for additional protein and not your main source. I don't use a protein shake but use a shake similar to Evox Muscle Meal called Massive Muscle by Supplements SA.

What is pasteurized eggs? lol
Yeah 2 jumbo eggs, little water to make it go down , or juice works well too, but juice has no reason to be in a diet, whole fruit only.

But this is the one time you need instant protein in your body, you have to take some form of shake after a workout ,Eating whole foods directly afterwards, you are missing that crucial 1 hour window that you need to replenish after a workout.

What i do is 5 mins before im done at gym (last few sets) I down 2 teaspoons of pure glucose in water to create an insulin spike, this primes my body for the protein shake and after 20 mins i consume one, and then after that I have to eat my meal.Try this for a week and see how your body responds.

I read somewhere that the whole "1 hour window" business is nonsense.

Well, you can believe that then, logically the one hour window makes perfect sense to me, especially if you are training with a calorie deficit already.

Had no idea about this method for eggs, but in my 15 years of eating raw eggs I have been fine, - been almost dead due to undercooked chicken though!

Because once you remove the skin and bone and compare cooked meat quantity - the fillet yields better value for money. Not to mention time and effort saved from cleaning the breast.

I cook up chicken fillet in 2kg portions and I also used to buy the breasts on the bone. Best move ever to switch over to clean fillets. Just in my personal opinion as someone that eats a LOT of chicken.

How do you figure?

Is your body going to use the nutrients you provide it differently the longer away from your workout you ingest said nutrients?

And if this is the case then how so?

I would imagine that as long as you are taking in the correct amount of macro nutrients for your goals it really shouldn't matter when you take them in.

After a workout, the muscles are torn, glucose in the body is low. Your muscles need amino acids to start the rebuilding process. If you do not provide it in that hour, the muscle eats itself for nutrients, but if you provide BEFORE it starts to break down - then it wont break itself down. This is why we like to eat every 3 hours - to keep the body in an anabolic environment and not a catabolic one.Every little bit helps especially if you are not a genetically gifted person(me).

Meal timing sure as hell makes a difference. Just from personal experience. If I hit my macro goals for the day by having a larger than normal lunch around 12:30, but only hit gym at 18:30 or 19:00 with no snack before that, my energy levels are seriously lacking and I cannot lift nearly as heavy as I can when I have a shake or meal about an hour beforehand. My snack of choice is 30g oats, 25g raisins and a scoop whey concentrate.

As for the whole 1 hour window - I don't believe the timing is that specific, however there is a benefit to eat within say 2 hours after heavy lifting than say only eating 6 hours later.

I'll try and find the articles I read on this and link them here.
