The Bodybuilders Thread: Circuit II

Since I can't do any bench or chest press due to shoulder impingement, I'll be doing dips from now on.

Bodybuilding guru Vince Gironda claims that dips are the granddaddy chest exercises when done with a slight forward lean and the elbows flared out. An upright posture will emphasize the triceps to a greater degree.

Weighted dips force the athlete to use his/her upper body and core to stabilize the load, unlike push-ups where the ground assists.

Pat Casey, the first man to bench press 600 pounds, had weighted dips at the core of his program. As a bonus, heavy dips can also help performance on the overhead press. On a personal note, dips helped me win the overhead press with ease at the 2005 Atlantis Strongest Man in America Contest. Virtually every great presser has trained with dips at some point.

Athletes with shoulder or elbow injuries may actually find dips to be a good substitute for bench pressing so omitting them from your program simply for fear of injury is not a great approach. If your joints are an issue, try lighter resistance on a machine or an assisted dip station and work your way up to heavier weight.

I love dips.

Trying to make a DIY weight belt so that I can do them weighted now.

I just can't keep a dumbbell between my feet and still concentrate on correct form.

I've also been looking at a few ideas for a DIY weight belt.

Been off whey for almost 2 months now. Only taking 5g of creatine a day.
Not getting in as much protein as I should but I'm still making decent gains and actually feel better knowing exactly what I am putting into my body.

I've been doing Stronglifts 5x5 for a while now and getting kinda bored with it.

Any suggestions for a general, all-round routine (ideally made up of compound exercises) to replace it?

The progression out of Stronglifts 5x5 is, usually when you keep on plateauing, is 5-3-1 program, or if you really want to skip that, next program is Madcow's 5x5. This is now intermediate level. You should only go madcow if you really don't get any more gains out of Stronglifts 5x5.

Cool, thanks. Will check them out.

Be a man and just get a chain. Extra points for carrying it in your gym bag with you.

Well that was kind of the idea. But I still need to figure out how to hook extra weights on there too.

Will obviously start with chain only but want to hook extra weights on too. Will be used for weighted dips, pull-ups and later weighted hanging leg raises.

No gym bag. Have a nice setup in garage. Will hang it around my neck when I enter home to impress wife.

I need advice for a rotator cuff injury. Been out of gym for 2 months, really frustrating, taken anti inflammatories and been given a shot into my shoulder, basically no progress in terms of recovery
Some advice would be appreciated

Go see a doctor.

Maybe you need surgery of some or other description?

Are you doing exercises to strengthen your back? It's what helped me the most when I had a shoulder impingement

they're pretty easy to make, I just copied the rogue dip belt, I used an old towing cable; carabiners; my dogs old chain and put them together with epoxy and a staple gun :D

Is there anything specific you can suggest

I've been to an orthopedic surgeon, ultra sound shows no tears.
Just taking very long to heal

Mines giving me trouble, too. Haven't been to anyone yet, though. May be a good idea - not getting any younger.

I have an uncle that could dislocate BOTH shoulders then pop them back in as a party gag. He had to have major surgery years later :p
