Guys: Need some advice please!

A few (about 8 ) months ago, while doing bench presses, my spotter looked away for just a moment with the effect of my left arm failing. From that day I had this pain / loss of power in my left shoulder and at first I thought that it will go away with a bit of rest ect. I think it might be the front deltoid. My shoulder is not sore and I feel no pain apart from working out. And when I do workout, I usually feel this uncomfortable pain / loss of power during chest and shoulder exercises (also with pull-ups). It's not so bad to the extend that I can't work out at all, it's just sore and very frustrating because my right arm can go on some more but my left arm/shoulder just won't.

Now I don't know where to go first. To a GP, fisio, biokinetic , orthopedic ?
I don't think (hope) it is a shoulder-operation kind of case. My shoulder doesn't give me hassles in everyday use apart from working out, although I am aware of it the whole time.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks guys.

I've been carrying a shoulder injury which sounds similiar to yours for about 3 years now, it was really bad during the first year, wasnt able to do pull ups, it hurt during barbell curls, bench press was really uncomfortable, flys were (and still are, impossible), pec deck was also impossible, the only thing that worked was avoiding those movements and exercises all together for a few months, and its been good for the past 2 years

If it pains while you're doing it, stop and do something else, if you push on and push heavy you're just going to delay your recovery

Surely you should lay off gym if you are injured? How else will it heal?

Tell a coke addict to lay off the powder ;)

Well you can do other exercises that dont target that specific area or bring about pain

thanks for the replies guys.
just came from the fisio. waiting to see the GP now. The fisio thinks it might be my bicep tendon that took a blow. Looks like I'll have to lay off on the bench press, shoulder press, dips and pullups... Just don't know what else to do. At the one end I want to get better, but I don't want to stop working out. Anyhow, will keep you guys posted.
Thanks!

I think if a coke addict's nose was close to collapse they may think about laying off the coke though, makes sense if you ask me. Funker if you keep going surely you can do permanent damage?
I dunno man lay off and let it heal dude

Insanity if you have about 700 cash to spare get animal cuts. Most mind blowing experience known to weight loss :D. Also if it does work they will give your money back but it will work.

I tried an eca stack as well which was good but animal cuts are the best thing ever. I have an eca stack left over if you are interested. Don't want anything for it but its just laying around.

Just saying - staying out of the gym isnt easy, and you can generally work around your injuries

MODS: Why is this not a sticky?
Question for the gymmers: does it matter how fast/slow you do the repetitions when you do a set of exercises? Obviously one cannot wait ages between reps, but is it better to do the reps slower, or faster?

For the record, I am a lady :)

Good question, I am not sure actually. I prefer to do my sets slowly, my form stays very good so i know i am working the correct muscles and not putting strain on any others.
I do them continuously, but relatively slowly compared to most ppl at the gym...

I will do some research and find out if there is a difference..

with regards to fast twitch and slow twitch....i dont think this will make a difference that much to those type of muscles (could be wrong though)...from what i remember, fast twitch can become slow twitch, but not the reverse. Usually we do sprints/doggies to keep the fast twitch muscles decent and build that explosive power for the legs (i dont really know with regards to the upper body...)

I agree with you, if its damaged, take time off...i used to try work through things, now as i am a little older it takes that much longer to recover....and i have learnt the lesson that constantly hammering away on damaged parts does serious long term damage...

With regards to animal stack, i am tempted...but to be honest, have yet to find one of these products that actually work. I find i do lose weight, but usually because I am aware of taking the products and am therefore more motivated to not eat junk and exercise...

Okay... So both the GP and the fisio agree that my bicep tendon is probably torn. I'm going to the orthopedic on Monday. But the term "operation" has been mentioned now quite a bit. But this guy is one of the best orthopedics in the country and he specializes on shoulders and knees, and it doesn't sound as if it's a huge procedure if it comes down to an operation.

But yeah, on the flip side , at least I'll get bigger legs :p

It's just a difficult choice for me, since I really don't want to stop working out, since I really love it. I think my body will get withdrawal symptoms :) But I know (thinking logically about it) that it's better to see to it that the problem is fixed. For it will be better on the long run.

Thanks guys!

I did some research on bicep tendonitis. Looks like it's a very common injury for many bodybuilders/gymmers. The up-side is that it's not a very serious injury in the sense that it can be treated. Even if an operation is needed, the recovery rates are very good and they say that one will regain full use of your arm/shoulder.

Now it's just up to the orthopedic (which is actually an orthopedic surgeon ( :( ) to hear what he says.

What did they say about giving it a rest? Can it heal itself or is the only option to keep pushing go for an op and keep pushing after the op?

I'll talk from experience when I say lay off the weights for a while. My injury came as a result of my spotter thinking I was joking when I asked for help on Dumb-bell press
Anyhoo, mine did end up being more shoulder related. Ended up doing thera band excercises to strengthen what was a 'weakened' muscle, due to the injury. I still suffer a little when I do lateral motions, but am otherwise 100's.

@Blu: Slower reps will generally aid muscle strength. It is not better or worse to do a rep either way, rather depending on what you want to achieve by doing it...
Possibly try doing your excercises with negatives and positives for a week and feel the difference yourself?

Just want to tone and firm. Not Madonna's upper arms, but nicely defined.

Still need to go to the orthopedist (the real expert) on Monday. But either way, op or no op, I'll be taking a break from heavy weight training (which I'm not very keen on doing, but I know it's for the best) and will start doing some rehab exercises.

What is your workout split like? I've used glutamine before but didn't notice much of a difference.

The most important thing to recover after a tough workout is food and a good night sleep. Make sure your getitng in enough calories.

My leg workouts have been killing me - I walk like I imagine a gay guy walks after getting laid - for most of the weeks, almost two months now.

This Wednesday was:
Squats
Hack Squats
Leg Press
Leg Extension
Weighted Lunges
10min cool down cycle

I need to use the door frame to help on and off the toilet :(
