On a daily basis. I pretty much squat every session (even if it's very light, I find it stretches my back the best so that I can avoid re-injuring it ) and I find guys doing bicep curls in the SQUAT rack more often than actual squats.

Had an argument with one of the personal trainers in the gym today as he was showing a young guy how to squat but using small 5kg weight for him to put his heel on. I mean FFS, who the hell would teach someone that on purpose...?
Fscked knees FTW:wtf:

You know, most weightlifting boots are made like that so you don't have to use plates under your heels. Also, adding the plates can switch emphasis onto a different muscle.

Sorry but not true. Squat boots are made with flat soles. The last thing you want when squatting is any weight transfer to the toes, which is why I always get a chuckle when some idiot squats with plates under his heels.

Yea, sorry, I should have said more. I do agree with you. I know it can cause more stress on the knees, increased torque on the back, inflammation of the plantar fascia, etc. What I was meant to get at was that they do make shoes (apparently. just according to someone I spoke to about weightlifting shoes who asked if I wanted a pair with or without raised heels) for people who I assume have trouble... balancing? I've also been told it switches some of the stress off certain muscles. Olympic boots do have raised heels though.

So yes, the point I was trying to make but failed horribly at was that while not a good idea, its also not uncommon. I see it almost daily. It seems to be among people who squat with a very narrow stance? so I wouldn't know really, I squat wide. Lol, I feel stupid posting it like that. I'm quite ill, my brain is cooked, I felt like saying something so I threw it in there short and without thinking. Apologies :) BUT Olympic shoes do come like that but I think are only used for narrower stances. I also see a lot of Olympic lifters using it for front squats. They are not raised so much that there is much weight transfered onto the toes.
I would think it would be totally retarded to use em for your typical wide powerlifting squat.

And while on the topic of squatting, Strongturd, I see in a post that you have been doing WS. What are your numbers currently?

Thanks for the replies, Tokyo, that makes sense and I see your point now. :)

lol @ olympic weight lifters
ofcourse.....

I once saw a trainer at the same gym have his client do reverse grip bench press.. idiots :D

I LOVE reverse grip bench pressing! Great way to get out of a plateau on the bench IMO, aside from just eating more. Hell, any way to get your tris stronger helps with a bigger bench, but reverse grip hits it especially hard IMO. I dare not do it without someone nearby to save my ass though haha.

I mainly train strength, but not for competing in competitions, etc. Deadlift currently at 260Kg, Squat 210Kg, but my benchpress is a bit of an embarrassment, 130Kg, sometimes 140Kg depending on how I feel that day. I don't use a weightbelt at all, and I despise gripping straps. I only use knee wraps for squatting 140Kg and up, because I do sub-parallel squats, and I use pine resin to prevent my hands from sweating when I do deadlifts.

Damn dude, comin up on a 600lb dead there. 260kgs is no joke. Nice work!

Currently sitting at around 165kg although I've been quite a bit heavier on occasion.

All still newbie numbers I'm afraid. Before I started "cutting" 7 weeks ago my squat was at 200x4, its now dropped to around 180x6. It actually dropped down to 160x1 at one point which was crazy! Slowly making my way back there. Hmm last time I pulled a max was in Jan and that was a 230 dead. I hadn't deadlifted since until last week and that was 160x12. My bench is 140. I'm weighing around 115-117 currently, at about 20%bf. Trying to get that down to maybe 10% lol...
I'm glad you mentioned doing Westside because I've been thinking of switching over to a powerlifting template next year.

Not too shabby at all, Tokyo. 200 for 4 on squat is nothing to sneeze at.

Guys,

Anybody know a physical store in JHB that sells just plain waxy maize?

Went to 3 stores this weekend, can't find plain waxy maize (most of they guys have the stuff mixed with other stuff) and even asked for dextrose, cant find that either.

How are guys taking their post work out shakes without either dextrose or waxy maize?

sorry don't know about any physical store, but you will be able to find waxy maize at supplementworld.co.za

I order all my supplements from them because stores in SA almost exclusively stock USN

I am in JHB and their delivery is quite quick normally less than 2 days from the date of order.
