Yea ok, good luck putting your weights down gently when you are doing heavy dumb bell presses, without snapping your wrist or giving yourself a hernia
Its a gym, not a spa

In all honesty I've always said that I you think you are strong enough to pick up a weight then you're also strong enough to put it down. Lifting heavy does not equal you throwing weight around in the gym. IMHO anyways :)

Agree, but not with db presses?

Its the only exercise I throw it with, and that wont change, too much of a risk picking up a shoulder/wrist/abdominal injury trying to sit up and put it down gently

haa haha ha ahaahhaaa, damn I literaly ROLLED on the FLOOR, while curling! LOL for your info I'm actualy an avid bodybuilding fan, thus I call all these okes fakes...they pump their bodies full of crap to attain a certain look, that's it, in varsity we had benchpress comps regularly, lol, back then pushing my 90kg frame was a piece of cake, and the guys who normaly phsyche each other up, like you guys, were the ones who couldn't even bench a measly 70kgs...

LOL - admittedly, I'm on a mission to drop weight now, as the defined chest and broad shoulders isn't really cool anymore, and quite honestly its hard to maintain, which I will take my hat off ot guys who gym regularly and consistantly increase weight every week or two! Its a massive task. You dont see Ronnie Coleman dropping weights now do you? Even in his movies where they fool around, there's no BANGING of weights...and screaming for a flippen 30kg curl!

Oh, for your info, I curled 30kg dumbells in varsity, in varsity all we did was spend time in the gym...lol, it was more a competition than a look, i'm ripped or my arm is 10cm etc. For guys who know what the essense of bodybuilding is, big ups, to guys who defend their weight dropping antics on the mere fact that their in a gym and should do that, even when gym management TOLD them NOT to do so, you guys are LAME! Oh, My bodyweight now is 104...with 15% fat, obviously around the belly areay, as will ANY fitness knowing person know, is the most difficult place to lose weight, NATURALLY! I've been struggling on and off for a year now and still can't get it off...its like I get it off...down to 12% in Dec, and then again, lol as per usual, its back again! I've been spinning alot now, this brings me to a question for the bodybuilders on here...do ya'll ONLY lift "ysters" or do ya'll also do some form of cardio, and, according to ya'll, is weight training better than cardio when wanting to loose weight?

LOL, the doushe bags don't have to answer, coz their answer will be, drop weight like I'm dropping weights! QUICK! Oh with a pill or two to boot!

ur obsession with trying to convince ppl how hard core you are and how much you maintain the image leads me to believe you are most likely full of it (that and the fact you refer to how much u did in varsity...rather than now......)why dont u just gym , get done what you need to and move on?
I dont gym to get big actually, I am moving to semi pro squash status and do what I need to maintain symmetry in my body....so as for your answer in cardio, i reckon i would grind you to the floor no questions asked...all my strength is functional...
As i said, if guys wanna psych themselves up, good for them, if it helps them, fantastic, i couldnt care, and i honestly dont care what you deem strong or impressive.

haaaahahahaahha...lol telling people not to bang weights is an insult? LMAO...haaaahahahahaha, lol, didn't someone do a study and the outcome was, bodybuilders have self esteem isues? LOL..go figure!

now, stop defending the NEED to be noticed!

LOL, I know a 78 y.o man who benches 210kg!!! So, 270kg man...you need to step yo game up! Haaahahahahaha

didnt someone do a study somewhere and mention that those mouthing off on forums are usually full of it? It sounds like you honestly care more about other ppl in the gym than doing your actual routines...
as for the 78 year old...I call BS....i seriously doubt that

definitely, I dont throw the weights down, but sometimes i find it difficult to put them down gently...
As i said, it irritates me more with those who dont put their weights back than anything else, because that directly affects me....the shouting, grunting and weight banging...it only bothers ppl because they let it

Good post. And yes, people that don't put their weights back rank right up there with Julius Malema, BP and Robert Mugabe.

In all honesty I've never injured myself doing dumbell presses and sitting up afterwards and thats going up to 65Kg. I can understand it if you fail and then can't sit up but Ive never had any issues or difficulty putting them down even after training to failure. I find people who drop weights tend to be the ones lifting beyond their own capability.

SNIP.....

Absolutely. I normally go fetch them and ask them to put their weights away or to help me unload the machine.

While I do agree that some people like throwing their weights down just to draw attention to themselves, there are practical limitations to what is possible and what not. The example of dumbbell presses was already mentioned. My training partner pulled a 400kg deadlift last night and I would challenge anybody on this forum to put that weight down gently. Correction, I challenge anybody in the world to put a 400kg deadlift down gently.

Listen I think some of us are talking past each other. You can still "put" down a heavy weight. I will make a lot of noise but you are still putting it down which is not the same thing as throwing your weights after you've used them. I've been moaned with at the VA in Richards bay for making too much noise while deadlifting. I promptly told them to FO or they could go fetch one of their personal trainers/staff to come show me how to put it down quietly. (They had the "old" 20 kg plates without rubber that "clank" together when you put it down) They left me alone after that.

Well, I dont do near 65kgs per arm on db press but its all relative really, and if you're not pushing yourself past your capability then whats the point? I can do my 6-8 reps comfortably with decent form, and without a spot, but just cant sit up and put it down afterwards, i know what my limit is, and i try hit it everytime i train - im not going to decrease the amount of weight im using just because the way i put it down is going to offend someone...

I've injured my wrist before from trying to put down a db properly during db press, nothing serious but enough to affect my training for a month

and our gym is the worst in that respect, they just expect the fitness consultants to pack everything away because 'thats what they paid for'.. cxnts
it has improved tho

OK...Taulz..., anyhoo...throwing weights down and putting HEAVY weights down is a diff thing...guys leave the weight at least 1m from the ground! Ok, this case was sorted as EVERYONE in the gym heard the 40kg dumbell fall, so management put him out. On other, more regular ocasions, you can see and hear when someone dropped a weight for FUN and SELF ENDULGENCE, and when someone really dropped a weight because they pushed to failure(which is understandable and correct) or dropped the weight coz something happened. These examples don't happen ALL THE TIME. But weight droppers...and screamers, and psych-uppers just works on my nerve, lol, no I don't pay mind to them just something that irks me out when I'm at the gym, and hearing some of you defend this behaviour for the pure reason that you do it coz its a GYM...just puts doubts in my head!

On the other hand...isn't this what Spotters are for in any case? To help you LIFT the heavy weight, and to assist in putting it down again, and all the other things ofcourse. Coming back to my illustrious lifting history, lol, when I lifted this year in Feb, I tried to start where I dropped off...90kg...and damn, I have to say, I"ve become SO weak in my chest! I'm down to 75kg's now!!! This week I'll lift up more on 80kg's and by end Aug I'll be back to 95-100kg...

Totally off topic here, but, is it me, or does the chest loose its form and strength quicker because you neglected it or didn't train it for a while?

Also, if you are exercising with monster weights ffs get another gorilla to spot you and assist with lowering weights safely.

I think this will make everyone happy and prevent you from injuring yourselves.

Looking for a bit of advice here, I am 18 years old, 1.67m tall and 65kgs. Short of going to join a gym what are some good exercises that i can do @ home to help get me a bit defined and fit at the same time :P, I have started using a stability ball and some kettle bell exercises i got off youtube :). I'm sure if i ate properly it would help. I Don't eat much junk food. Thanks for the help in advance.

look at some of the workouts on www.mh.co.za most of the exercises on there you can do at home. you could also try the P90x

Thanks, I can do the gym thing at the moment though unfortunately. I did however buy the bench, dumbbells, barbell and weights. I'll have a look at that routine though thanks. If anyone else can give me a list of basic excises with this equipment just to start off it would be great, eg chest - bench presses, arms - curls etc. Just need stuff that isn't to advanced for now just to get me into it. Thanks :)

@ryan411, that workout program seams awesome though, think I'll start with that and modify as needed :)
Hey dude, I am finding Scooby1961 video's on youtube to be VERY informative and it could be right up your alley cause he covers home workouts and a fair bit of beginners stuff! :) He comes across as being very honest and some of his videos are quite amusing :)

[edit]Case in point is this video about bulking up foods. Fast forward to 1min25 if u start to think he's mad and want to close the video :p

Good advice from the other posters so far. Also check out Scooby1961's videos i posted in my previous post and check out http://iwantsixpackabs.com/abs.html for a 16 week non-gym programme though at a certain point u will need some decent rubber bands around week3 i think.

[edit]: I would say that P90X is a more professional and possibly more complete package, so you can't go wrong with that i think :)

At a guess this applies to any muscle group?

Anyways, you asked about cardio and getting that waistline down? Here's what Scooby says:

Its not too late, you can still get 6-pack abs in time for beach weather this summer! Getting 6-pack abs is quite simple but requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Two things you need to do to get 6-pack abs. The first is to do ab exercises but that isnt as important as you might think. The second, and most important thing you need to do to get 6-pack abs is to lose weight.

Lets quickly cover the losing weight part. Remember, this is the most important thing to get 6-pack abs. To lose weight you need to eat less and do more cardio. I have lots of videos on nutrition and weight loss, you can view them by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list...
