I'd quit VA if they suddenly added that rule.

... and next week I'm adding baby powder.

My baby is almost one year old now; I used to exercise about 4 x per week and then when I got pregant, I stepped it up to pretty much every second day, I was quite happy with that!

Since my child was born, I have just about stopped exercising. I never knew how much time a child takes ! :) Now that she is one year old and I have a nanny for her, I want to go back to a decent program of training but I know it's gonna be hard work and agony ahead!!!

So I thought it was bad that the Virgin Active in Tygervally only has 2 squat racks, usually occupied by someone doing barbell curls or funny stretching exercises, but sounds like in the big USA its much worse.

Article came out in the past few days: http://startingstrength.com/articles/no_chalk_allowed.pdf

Admittedly, I use one of those racks for barbell curls, but then I do shoulder presses as well. I also use it for deadlifting. ;)

And the moment they tell me no chalk allowed, I'll walk away and never pay a cent to them again.

I had to wait for someone doing curls today in the squat rack - was seriously ****ed off - dead-lifts were waiting.

I need some advice, I tore my ACL and both medial and lateral meniscus. This is the second time I have done this, first was 8 years ago. Rehab went great and knee was 100%.

I gym quite hard go on average 6 times a week never longer than 50mins, its not all solid weight training but got a 5 day split going
day 1 - back
day 2 - quads
day 3 - chest
day 4 - hammies
day 5 - shoulders

on other days ill mix it up with a light full body, maybe a plyometric session or a crossfit session.

Now I gym so I can sleep, if I dont gym I dont sleep, problem is now that I have buggered my knee I need two surgeries first one to repair old tunnels (bone grafting) and then four months later after healing do the reconstruction and ACL reattachment. What can I do to keep gym interesting in the mean time and get a decent workout!?

At the moment I do the arm rowing machine(dont know what its called but only ever see me and old guys using it now!)for 20 mins as cardio, then because I cant lift weights I only use machines and do a superset of 3 or 4 exercises no rest and go 5 mins intense arm rowing cardio and do that 3 times, its good so far but I can see im gonna get very bored of it fast!!

Knee is in a range-o-brace all the time and I cant bend it passed 90 degrees, cant pick up weights(pressure on my meniscus) hence only machines...

Any suggestions and advice????

Try other full body exercises that won't need picking up weights, like dips (both chest and tricep version), pull-ups and chin-ups (do both wide and close grip for both) are great exercises for upper-body.

At least you can still do Bench press. Perhaps ask someone to hand you the weights for shoulder presses ect. so that you can still do those without having to pickup the weights.

For back you can also do: Lat-pulldowns (if you cant do chin-ups, pull-ups) as well as t-bar rows.

Having problems with your knees means only legs that are a real problem, you can still do everything else for upper-body, as long as you don't have to pick up the weights it seems.

Most definitely.

I can live with you doing shoulder-press there, I mean I also do shoulder presses and deadlifts there, it really is the safest place to do those. However I believe barbell curls can be done anywhere else in the gym, especially if its below 60kg.

Anyways, I generally let the people finish whatever they do without making a fuss, lucky for me I gym in the mornings so its mostly bare-able, and nowadays I see people know when I gym and that I generally speaking do exercise there you can't do elsewhere in the gym.

As for quitting VA, I don't pay them sadly, its discovery that does, and my discovery is paid for by the company as a benefit. Although one day if I am lucky I will have the funds to build my own home-gym. Though priorities, so many other things that need to be paid 1st.

I'm usually there around 7pm, peak times. I get really ****ed off because I have to wait for EVERYthing then. :( But I suppose, like me, that really is the best time for most working folk.

And although I do heavy deadlifts (250kg +), and fairly heavy squats (180kg+), I do barbell curls of about 40 or 50kg. It's just easier to use the olympic bar, and it's the only place in the gym you won't bump into anyone with that bar. :o

Heh yeah thats why I really want to get my own home gym, so that I can exercise on my own rules and time and pace.

Only need space, planning on extending the garage and convert one side to my gym area. Then after I will only need a power rack, flat bench, dip bar and pull-up bar, and of-coarse the olympic bar and weight plate set. Then I will be happy.

I have to gym from home , I work 60km away, so travel +-130km a day.
Also like to spend time with my 15month old son.

So when I get home it's change into gym clothes and hit the garage, luckily I have a 4 car garage, 6 if you include car port.
I have 280kg of plates and have built up my own dumbells and barbells out of that, after each session I have to prepare the next days weights so it's ready for me.
2x Bench press benches.
Pullup station, Pec Dec, Lat Pulldown etc.
Floor covered in neoprene MATS from GAME

Then an intense as possible routine with my own playlist playing in the background :)
I have mostly been converted to the power or Olympic lift exercises with dead-lift being a favorite as it's quick and intense.
Then I can play with my son for 30min while wife prepares bottles.
Feed Son.
Bath Son.
Wife takes him to bed.
Then prepare supper for me and the wife.
2hrs of TV and then bed.

Really miss gym though especially cable crossovers :(

Woah thats double the distance I cover. Work 25km away, so its not as bad, depending on the time I go to work. Gym is like 5 minutes drive away, so not so bad, but I would prefer not having to wait for people and my music ect. I am still single though, so still have lots of time and going out of-coarse still opens up possibilities.

I myself are now a strong believer in power lifting over just body building. Unless you use drugs, there is no way you will ever get big, at least with power-lifting you get stronger with time, burns fat like I've never seen before as well as gain strength which I love.

I’m doing the home gym thing
Problem is you are very limited, have you guys seem what Dumbbell’s cost, its farking ridicules, so i have two 12kg dumbbell’s, and one of these home gym machines, the arm curls sucks big time, you can’t properly bench or do shoulder exercises, and you are limited to 50kg, so what do i do if i want to go heavier?
I have thought of buying a barbell with a EZ bar, the problem is the price of the lose plates (weights), your mouth will drop open if you see the prices

Body Building is more an "art" to me - way to much discipline required. Power Lifting is perfect for me. My ultimate goal would be a Jim Wendler build:

I can't wait to have my body fat down to 8-10% so I can eat like a horse and hit the weights hard...

Ask him what he paid for 1.25kg - your mouth will drop :p

I bought all my stuff second hand in around 2000, there is always stuff in classified and second hand places.
I then bought a "home" gym from GAME and souped it up with better steel and stronger bolts.

Must admit, I agree, bodybuilding is about how you look vs powerbuilding is about strength. I think for now I prefer strength :)

How much did he pay? Going by your comment sounds like it was even more than what I paid?

Read an interesting article written by a bodybuilder in the US.
As example:

If he trains his chest on Monday, the next day he starts his warm-up with a chest exercise, just one heavy set, this apparently and I have read it the latest Men's Fitness as well by a conditioning coach for some some olympic dudes, further tears your chest muscles slightly to increase growth.
Can be used with any exercise apparently but is most effective for legs.

Tried it after my chest workout on Monday but instead just stretched in a doorway, nice deep stretch and then did 20 push-ups before my arm routine, felt nice to give it a little re-warm.

Today before back I'll do a set of arm curls and triceps skull-crushers before my routine.
they did mention not to overtrain.
